Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Bara narrates that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would lie down in his sleeping place, he would recite this supplication: Translation: O Allah! I have entrusted my soul to You, and I have turned my face towards You, and I have entrusted my affairs to You, and I have taken You as my protector, desiring Your mercy and fearing Your punishment, and there is no refuge and no place of safety from You except with You. I have believed in the Book which You have revealed, and I have believed in the Prophet or Messenger whom You have sent.

Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to sleep, he would recite this supplication: O Allah! In Your name I die and I live. And when he (peace and blessings be upon him) would wake up, he would recite this supplication: All praise is due to Allah who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the return after death.

Hazrat Saib narrates that I was sitting with Hazrat Ammar when a person came to him. He said: Shall I not teach you a few words? The narrator says it was as if he was relating these words from the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): When you lie down on your bed at night, say: O Allah! I have entrusted my soul to You, and I have turned my face towards You, and I have entrusted my affairs to You, and I have taken You as my protector. I have believed in the Book You have revealed, and in the Prophet You have sent. You alone created my soul; for You alone is its living and its dying. If You cause it to die, then have mercy on it, and if You postpone its death, then protect it, along with safeguarding faith.

Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that Hazrat Abu Bakr submitted to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "O Messenger of Allah, please teach me a supplication which I may recite in the morning and evening." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Recite this supplication: "O Allah! Knower of the unseen and the seen, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Lord and Sovereign of everything. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my own self, from Satan and his associates." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Recite these words when you enter the morning, when you enter the evening, and when you lie down on your bed.

Hazrat Bara says that when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would wake up, he would recite this supplication: All praise is due to Allah who gave me life after causing me to die. And when he intended to sleep, he would recite this supplication: O Allah! In Your name I live and in Your name I die.

Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When any of you intends to lie down on his bed, he should remove the extra clothes from underneath him, then he should dust off his bed, because he does not know what might have come onto his bed after him. Then he should lie down on his right side, then recite this supplication: My Lord, in Your name I have placed my side, and in Your name I will raise it. So if You take my soul, have mercy on it. And if You leave it alive, protect it with the protection with which You protect Your righteous servants.

Hazrat Bara bin Azib narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to a companion: When you lie down on your bed, recite this supplication: O Allah! I have entrusted my soul to You, and I have turned my face towards You, and I have entrusted my affairs to You, and I have taken You as my protector, desiring Your mercy and fearing Your punishment. There is no refuge and no place of safety from Your grasp except with You. I believe in the Book which You have revealed and in the Prophet whom You have sent. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you die that night, you will die upon the natural faith of Islam.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Babah narrates that Hazrat Abu Hurairah said: Whoever, while lying on his bed, recites this supplication: There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, He is alone, He has no partner, His is the dominion and for Him is all praise and thanks, and He is capable of everything. Allah is pure from all defects and is with His praise, all praise is for Allah alone, there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, Allah is the Greatest. Then the sins of that person will be forgiven even if they are as much as the foam of the sea.

Hazrat Naufal narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: "What has brought you here?" I submitted: "O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon you! I have come so that you may teach me a supplication to recite at bedtime." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When you lie down on your bed, recite Surah Al-Kafirun, and after completing it, go to sleep. For this Surah is a declaration of freedom from shirk (associating partners with Allah)."

Hazrat Naufal Ashja'i narrates that I submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Please tell me a supplication which I may recite in the morning and evening. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Recite Surah Al-Kafirun, and after finishing it, go to sleep. For indeed, it is a declaration of freedom from shirk (polytheism).

Hazrat Asim narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When you lie down on your bed, recite this supplication: In the name of Allah, and in the way of Allah, and upon the religion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). And when you place the deceased in his grave, recite this supplication at that time as well.

Hazrat Hafsa narrates that when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would lie down on his bed, he would recite this supplication: My Lord! Save me from Your punishment on the Day when You will resurrect Your servants.

Hazrat Bara bin Azib narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to a companion: O so-and-so! When you lie down on your bed, recite this supplication: O Allah! I have surrendered my soul to You, and I have turned my face towards You, and I have entrusted my affairs to You. There is no refuge and no place of safety from Your punishment except with Your mercy. I have believed in the Book which You have revealed and in the Prophet whom You have sent. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: If you die that night, you will die upon the natural faith of Islam, and if you reach the morning, you will attain goodness.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked an Ansari companion: "When you intend to sleep, what supplication do you recite?" He replied: "I recite: 'In Your name, I lay down my side, so forgive me.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, you have been forgiven."

Hazrat Mansur narrates that Hazrat Ibrahim said: Our companions used to instruct us, while we were children, that when we lay down on our beds, we should say Subhan Allah thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah thirty-three times, and Allahu Akbar twenty-four times.
