Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by some people from the tribe of Aslam who were practicing archery. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You shoot, and I am with Ibn Al-Adra’." Upon this, those people said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! How can we compete when you are with some of us and not with others?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Banu Ismail! You shoot, I am with all of you."

Hazrat Ibn Abu Hadra Salmi narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by some people of the tribe of Aslam while they were competing with each other in archery. Upon this, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: O Banu Ismail! Shoot arrows, indeed your father was also an archer. And you shoot, and I am with Ibn Al-Adra’. So the people stopped their hands. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: What happened to you that you are not shooting? They said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! How can we shoot when you have said that you are with Ibn Al-Adra’, and indeed we know that your side can never be defeated! The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: You shoot, I am with all of you.

A man from the tribe of Aslam, whose name is Ibn al-Adra’, narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Adopt the lifestyle of the tribe of Ma‘ad, wear thick and coarse (clothes), compete with each other in archery, and walk barefoot.

Hazrat Uqbah bin Aamir Juhani narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surely, Allah will admit three people into Paradise because of a single arrow: the one who made it, seeking reward, the one who shot it, and the one who handed it over. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Practice archery and riding. And your practicing archery is more beloved to me than your riding. And all games that a Muslim servant plays are false, except for his practicing archery with his bow, training his horse, or entertaining himself with his wife. Indeed, all these things are among the truth.

The aforementioned saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) from Hazrat Uqbah bin Amir is also transmitted through this chain. However, in this chain, the words "manblah" are also present.

Imam Awza'i states that Hazrat Bilal bin Sa'd said: I found the companions in such a state that they were very strict regarding their objectives. And some of them used to joke with one another, but when night fell, all of them became devoted worshippers.

Ibrahim Taimi's father narrates that I saw Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) attacking between two marks.

Hazrat Abu Al-Adbas narrates that I heard Hazrat Umar saying: "Frighten the insects before they frighten you, and compete with each other in archery, and adopt the lifestyle of the tribe of Ma'ad, and wear coarse, rough clothing, and protect your wealth from destruction, and do not settle in a place where your sustenance is constrained, and frighten the snakes before they frighten you, and keep your family in order."
