One who seeks knowledge to show off or boast
Hadith 27806
٢٧٨٠٦ - حدثنا يزيد بن هارون قال: أخبرنا (التيمي) (١) عن سيار عن (عائذ) (٢) اللَّه قال: (الذي) (٣) (يتتبع) (٤) الأحاديث ليحدث بها لا يجد ريح الجنة.
Hazrat Sayyar narrates that Hazrat Aaidhullah said: Whoever seeks out hadiths with the intention of narrating them to people, that person will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise.
Hadith 27807
٢٧٨٠٧ - حدثنا عن سفيان عن برد عن مكحول قال: من طلب الحديث (ليجاري) (١) به السفهاء أو (ليماري) (٢) به العلماء أو ليصرف به وجوه الناس إليه فهو في النار.
Hazrat Burd narrates that Hazrat Makhool said: Whoever acquires the knowledge of Hadith with the intention that through it he may argue with fools, or through it he may boast before the scholars, or through it he may attract people towards himself, then such a person will be in Hell.
Hadith 27808
٢٧٨٠٨ - حدثنا (سريج) (١) بن النعمان قال: حدثنا فليح عن أبي طوالة عبد اللَّه ابن عبد الرحمن بن معمر عن سعيد بن يسار عن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "من تعلم علمًا مما يبتغى به وجه اللَّه لا يتعلمه إلا ليصيب به عرضًا من الدنيا لم يجد عرف الجنة يوم القيامة"، -يعني ريحها (٢).
Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever acquires knowledge by which Allah’s pleasure is sought, with the intention of gaining worldly possessions through it, will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise on the Day of Resurrection.
