Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: It is better for the belly of any one of you to be filled with pus and become diseased than for it to be filled with poetry. Hafs, while narrating this hadith, did not mention the word "jauf" (belly).

Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri narrates that we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the valley of Arj when a poet began to recite his poetry. Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Seize this devil," or he said, "Stop this devil." For it is better for any of you that his belly be filled with pus than to be filled with poetry.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is better for a man's belly to be filled with pus than to be filled with poetry.

Hazrat Abu Al-Zara reports that Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It is better for a man's belly to be filled with pus than to be filled with poetry.

Ibrahim narrates that Hazrat Uthman said: It is better for a man's stomach to be filled with pus than for it to be filled with poetry.

Hazrat Abu Salih narrates that Hazrat Abu Hurairah said: It is better for a man's stomach to be filled with pus than for him to be filled with pus.

Hazrat Amr bin Harith narrates that Hazrat Umar bin Khattab said: It is better for a man's stomach to be filled with pus than for it to be filled with poetry.

Hazrat Abu Dhuha narrates that Hazrat Masruq once recited a verse of poetry and became silent before reciting the second verse, and said: I dislike that even a single verse of poetry should be written in my book of deeds.

Hazrat Abu Nofal bin Abu Aqrab narrates that Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked whether poetry was recited in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). She replied: The most disliked thing to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the recitation of poetry.

Hazrat Awam narrates that Ibrahim said: The companions greatly disliked any poetry that resembled the Holy Qur'an.

Hazrat Sa'd narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: It is better for any of you that his belly be filled with pus than to be filled with poetry.
