Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: There are four traits; whoever possesses all of them is a pure hypocrite, and whoever has one of them has a trait of hypocrisy until he gives it up. They are: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; when he makes a pact, he betrays it; and when he quarrels, he resorts to foul language.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Yazid narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Consider three things as signs of a hypocrite. When he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he makes a deal, he deceives.

Hazrat Sabeeh bin Abdullah narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: There are three things, whoever possesses them will be a hypocrite: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when something is entrusted to him, he betrays the trust. And he recited this verse: Translation: "And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah, that if He gives us of His bounty, we will surely give charity and surely be among the righteous. But when He gave them of His bounty, they became stingy with it and turned away. As a result, Allah placed hypocrisy in their hearts until the day they will meet Him, because they broke their promise to Allah and because they used to lie."

Hazrat Mujahid narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: There are three things, whoever possesses them will be a hypocrite. They are: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when something is entrusted to him, he betrays the trust.

Hazrat Laith narrates that Hazrat Mujahid said: There are three things, whoever possesses them will be a hypocrite, even if he prays, fasts, and claims, "Indeed, I am a Muslim." They are: when he speaks, he lies; when he is entrusted, he betrays the trust; and when he makes a promise, he breaks it.

Hazrat Mughirah bin Shu’bah narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever narrates a hadith from me and he knows that it is false, then he is one of the two liars.

Hazrat Samurah narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever relates a hadith from me and he knows that it is false, then he is one of the two liars.

The aforementioned statement of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is narrated from Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) through this chain of transmission.
