Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ubaidullah bin Yazid narrates from his father, from Umm Ayyub, that she said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to our house, so we prepared food for him from some vegetables. He (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked it and said: "I am not like you; I fear causing discomfort to my companion."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever eats from this vegetable (i.e., garlic), let him not come near the mosque until its smell has gone away."

It is narrated from the cook of Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him). He says that Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to instruct me not to put kurrath (a particular pungent-smelling vegetable) in his food.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him). He says that whoever eats garlic should not come near us for three (days).

It is narrated from Hazrat Abi Burdah that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, noticed the smell of garlic from Hazrat Mughirah. So the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Did I not forbid you from this tree?" He replied: "O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon you! I swear to you that you must put your hand (into the cloak or shirt)." And at that time, he was wearing a cloak or shirt... So the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, put his hand in, and there was a bandage on him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "You have an excuse."

Hazrat Abu Rabab narrates about Hazrat Ma’qil bin Yasar, he says that I heard him say: We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on a journey when he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever eats from this tree should not come near our place of prayer."

Hazrat Mu'tamir narrates from his father that he said: Hasan saw karath with his mother and said, "O mother! Throw away this filthy tree."

It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir. He says that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever eats from this vegetable should not come near our mosque," or he said: "He should not come near the mosque."

It is narrated from Hazrat Mughirah bin Shu’bah, he says: I ate garlic, then I came to the prayer place of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I found him in such a state that he had already performed one rak’ah before me. So when he (peace and blessings be upon him) completed the prayer, I stood up and began to perform the rak’ah I had missed. He (peace and blessings be upon him) sensed the odor and said: “Whoever eats from this vegetable should by no means come near our mosque until its smell goes away.” Hazrat Mughirah says: So when I completed the prayer, I presented myself before him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I have an excuse. Please grant me your hand. Hazrat Mughirah says: By Allah, I found him (peace and blessings be upon him) very gentle, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me his hand, and I placed his hand upon my chest. He (peace and blessings be upon him) felt that there was a bandage tied there, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed, you have an excuse.”

It is narrated from Hazrat Shareek bin Hanbal, he says that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever eats this foul vegetable (i.e., garlic), then he should not come near our place of prayer."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ma’dan bin Abi Talha that Hazrat Umar bin Khattab said: You people eat two such plants which I consider foul. These are garlic and onion. In the blessed era of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I used to see that if a person from whom their smell emanated, he would be taken by the hand and taken outside towards Baqi’. Even then, whoever among you is compelled to eat them should kill their (odor) by cooking them.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Rahm Samai that Hazrat Abu Ayyub related to them from the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace be upon him) said: "There is onion in this (food), but you may eat it. And I dislike eating it because of this (angel). However, you may eat it."

Hazrat Hisham narrates about Hasan that he disliked eating garlic, onions, and leek.

It is narrated from Hasan, he says: It does not please me that I eat it (i.e., garlic), nor does it please me that I receive gold equal to its weight.
