Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir. He says that we were with the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when during that time he, peace and blessings be upon him, asked for water. So a man said, "Shall we not give you nabidh to drink?" He, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Why not?" The narrator says, so that man ran off and then returned with a bowl in which there was nabidh. Then the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Why did you not cover it, even if you had placed a stick across it?"

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both). He says that the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the Siqayah (the place where water was given to the pilgrims) and he (peace be upon him) said: "Give me water from this." Hazrat Abbas said: Should we not give you from the drink that we prepare at home? He (peace be upon him) said: "No, rather give me from that which the common people drink." The narrator says: Then a bowl of nabidh was brought to him (peace be upon him) and he tasted it! Then he (peace be upon him) mixed something in it and then said: "Bring water." So he (peace be upon him) poured that water into the nabidh and then said: "Add more to it." He said this two or three times. Then after that he (peace be upon him) said: "When you find this, then do the same with it."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), he says: We were sitting in the presence of the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) when a bowl was brought to him containing some beverage. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) brought the bowl close to himself and then returned it. Upon this, some of those sitting with him asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Is this forbidden? The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring that bowl back." So the companions returned the bowl. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for water, and he poured that water into the bowl and then drank it, and said: "Look at these beverages. When they exceed the limit upon you (i.e., become intoxicating), then break their intensity with water."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Masood that the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was performing Tawaf around the Ka'bah, when during this he felt thirsty and requested water. So, Nabidh was brought for him from the Saqayah. He smelled it, then mixed it, and said: "Bring me a bucket of Zamzam." Thus, he mixed the Zamzam in it and drank it. Upon this, a man asked, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Is this forbidden?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "No."

It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir that he said: Nabidh used to be prepared for the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in a waterskin. And when there was no waterskin, Nabidh used to be prepared for him in a drinking vessel. Ash'ath says: Taur is made from the bark of a tree.

It is narrated from Hazrat Zadhan, he says: I asked Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) about Nabidh. And I said to him: Our language is different from your language, so please explain it to us in our tongue. Upon this, Hazrat Umar said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (the use of) Hantamah, and it is a kind of jar. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (the use of) Dubba’, and it is a (man-made) vessel of gourd. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (the use of) Muzaffat, and it is a vessel coated with pitch. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (the use of) Naqir, and it is a vessel made from the thick branch of a tree. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that Nabidh be prepared in water skins.

It is narrated from Hazrat Amina that she heard Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) say: "Is any one of you incapable of making a waterskin from the hide of her sacrificial animal every year? Because the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade nabidh (fermented drink) in earthen pots and pitch-covered vessels." Some other things were also mentioned, which (Amina's student) Taimi forgot.

Hazrat Simak narrates about a man who asked Hazrat Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) about nabidh (a drink). He replied: Drink it, but when you fear that you may become intoxicated, then leave it.

It is narrated from Ibn Awn. He says: I asked Muhammad about the nabidh (date-infused drink) in a waterskin that has been tied and hung up? So Muhammad said: I do not see any harm in it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Waleed bin Amr bin Akhi Abu Nazrah that he asked Hasan about the "Juff." Hasan asked: What is Juff? The questioner explained that it is a waterskin based on three legs, which is tied from the top and bottom. Hasan said: There is no harm in it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Amr bin Maymoon, he says that Hazrat Umar used to say: We drink this strong beverage so that we can digest the camel meat present in our stomachs, so that it does not cause us harm. Therefore, whoever has doubt or suspicion in drinking it, let him mix water into it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Qais bin Abi Hazim, he says that Utbah bin Farqad told me that I presented myself before Hazrat Umar, and he called for a large bowl in which there was nabidh, which was close to becoming vinegar. Hazrat Umar said, "Drink it." I took the bowl and drank it, but it did not go down my throat easily. Then Hazrat Umar took the bowl and drank it, and then said, "O Utbah! We drink this strong type of nabidh so that by means of it we may digest the camel meat in our stomachs, so that it does not cause us harm."

It is narrated from Hammad, he says that nabidh made from the raisins of Ta’if was brought to Umar. The narrator says: When he tasted it, he wanted to dilute it and said: Surely, the nabidh of the raisins of Ta’if is strong. Then he called for water and poured it into it, then drank it. And he said: If any of you finds nabidh too strong, then add water to it and drink it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib that some people from the tribe of Thaqif met Hazrat Umar bin Khattab when he was near Makkah. So Hazrat Umar invited them along with their nabidh. Thus, they came to Hazrat Umar and brought a bowl of nabidh with them. Hazrat Umar brought it close to his mouth, then he asked for water and mixed water into it two or three times. Then he said: Break it with water.

It is narrated from Hazrat Mujahid, he says that Hazrat Umar said: I am a person whose stomach remains hard. So when I drink this sattu, it does not suit me, and when I drink this milk, it also does not suit me. And when I drink this strong nabidh, it loosens my stomach.

It is narrated from Hazrat Suwaid bin Ghaflah. He says that in the land of Shaam, I used to drink nabidh from large pitchers along with Hazrat Abu Darda and other companions of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

It is narrated from Hazrat Shamas. He says that Hazrat Abdullah said: As long as people's drinks remain lawful, they will remain steadfast in religion. Until their drinks become unlawful.

It is narrated from Hazrat Umar bin Maimoon, he says that when Hazrat Umar was struck with a spear and the physician came to him, he asked: "Which drink do you like the most?" He replied: "Nabidh."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Husain. He says that I saw Zar bin Hubaysh drinking nabidh from pitchers.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). She says that I used to prepare nabidh for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I would take a handful of raisins and put them in it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Mujahid. He says that Hazrat Amir said: Drink the nabidh of walimah, but do not become intoxicated by it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abi Laila. He says that I bear witness over the companions of Badr that they used to drink nabidh at wedding feasts.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Dharr, he says that drinking water once a day, drinking nabidh once a day, and drinking milk once a day is sufficient for me, and on Friday, one qafeez of wheat.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdul Malik, he says: I asked Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about strong nabidh (fermented drink)? He replied: Once the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was staying in Makkah when a man came to him and sat beside him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sensed a kind of strong odor from him, so he asked, "What have you drunk?" The man replied, "Nabidh." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Bring it to me." The narrator says, then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for water, poured it into it, and drank it. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "When your water skins exceed the limit for you, then break them with water."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ishaq, he says: Once I prepared food and invited the companions of Hazrat Abdullah… that is, Amr bin Shurahbil, Abdullah bin Zayb, Ammarah, Marrah Hamdani, and Umar bin Maymoon… and I served them nabidh and tila and they drank it. Hazrat A’mash says: I asked him (Abu Ishaq), “Were those people looking at the jars?” Hazrat Abu Ishaq said: Yes, they were looking at the jars and it was being served to them from those very jars.

Hazrat Ja'far narrates from his father that he used to drink nabidh. (In such a way that) nabidh would be prepared for him in the morning, which he would drink in the evening.

It is narrated from Yusuf, he says that Hasan used to be invited to wedding feasts and he would drink their nabidh.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ishaq, he says: I arranged a wedding feast, so I invited the companions of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and the companions of Hazrat Abdullah. From among the companions of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), I invited Ammarah bin Abd, Hubairah bin Yareem, and Harith bin A’war, and from among the companions of Hazrat Abdullah, I invited Alqamah bin Qais, Abdur Rahman bin Yazid, and Abdullah bin Zhaib. Then I prepared nabidh for them in pitchers, so they would drink from those pitchers. (The narrator says) I asked: Were they looking at the pitchers? Abu Ishaq said: Yes, they were looking at the pitchers.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ja'far. He says that Nabidh is permissible.

It is narrated from Hazrat Sufyan Attar, he says that a man asked Mahan Hanafi and said: O Abu Salim! What do you say about nabidh? He said: I say about nabidh that whoever declares the things made lawful by Allah as unlawful is just like the one who declares the things made unlawful by Allah as lawful.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Alaa, he says that the saying of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, regarding drinks reached here that he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Do not drink that which corrupts your minds and destroys your wealth."

It is narrated about Prophet Muhammad that he used to drink nabidh only from a waterskin whose mouth was tied.

It is narrated from Hazrat Taliq bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We were sitting in the blessed presence of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) when, during this time, a delegation of Abdul Qais arrived. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them, "What has happened to you that your faces are pale, your bellies are swollen, and your veins are protruding?" The narrator says that they replied, "Our leader had come to your service and he had asked you about the drink that suits us, but you (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade him from it. And we live in a land where fever is very common." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Drink whatever beverage suits you."

It is narrated from Ibrahim. He says that when nabidh is sweet, there is no good in it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Saeed bin Musroq, he says that a man invited us to a meal, so we ate the food. Then that man brought a drink to us. Thus, everyone drank that drink, but I did not drink. The narrator says: Upon this, Bakr bin Saad looked at me in such a way that I began to think he had become displeased with me.

It is narrated from Hasan. He says: When you go to your (Muslim) brother, then ask him about his drink. So if his drink is nabidh from a waterskin, then you may drink it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hudhail bin Shurahbeel. He says that Hazrat Umar bin Khattab passed by the tribe of Banu Thaqif, so he asked them for water. They said among themselves, "Hide your nabidh and give him water to drink." Upon this, Hazrat Umar said, "O group of Thaqif! Give me some of your nabidh to drink." The narrator says, so they gave him nabidh to drink. Hazrat Umar ordered a servant, who added water to it, then he (Umar) stopped him with his own hand. Then he said, "O group of Thaqif! You drink this strong drink. So, whoever among you is put in doubt by it to any degree, he should break it with water."
