Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Suwaid bin Muqarrin. He says that I brought nabidh in a pitcher to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and I asked him about (the ruling of) nabidh. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me from nabidh. So I took the pitcher and broke it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed, he says that the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the nabidh (fermented drink) of a green pitcher. (The student of Abu Saeed says) I asked, "What about the white one?" He replied, "I do not know."

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says that the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the use of nabidh (fermented drink) made in a pitcher.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abi Awfa, he says that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade (the use of) green pitchers. (A student of Ibn Abi Awfa says) I asked, "Is the white pitcher (also forbidden)?" Ibn Abi Awfa said: I do not know.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdul Aziz bin Asid, he says that a person asked Hazrat Ibn Zubair: "Tell us the ruling about the Nabidh (fermented drink) of a pitcher." So Hazrat Ibn Zubair replied: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbidding the Nabidh of a pitcher."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ubayyah bin Rifa’ah that his grandfather, Hazrat Rafi’ bin Khadij, saw a green jar belonging to his family lying in the sun. He picked up a hard stone and threw it towards the jar, breaking it. Suddenly, ghee came out of it. Hazrat Nafi’ said, “You people, take care of your ghee.” The narrator of the hadith, Yahya, says that he had thought there was nabidh (fermented drink) in the jar.

It is narrated from a woman of Banu Shayban that her husband came to Banu Shayban and told them that the Commander of the Faithful, Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), had forbidden people from drinking nabidh (fermented drink) from a pitcher. The narrator states that after this, we broke our pitcher.

Hazrat Uyainah bin Abdur Rahman narrates from his father that when Hazrat Abu Burdah returned from a journey, he began by visiting the house of Hazrat Abu Bakrah. There he saw a pitcher in the house, so he asked, "What is this?" He was informed that it contained nabidh for Hazrat Abu Bakrah. Upon this, he said, "It is preferable to me that you pour it into another waterskin."

It is narrated from Hazrat Dawood bin Farahij who says that I heard Hazrat Abu Hurairah forbidding nabidh (fermented drink).

It is narrated from Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair ... People mentioned nabidh (a type of drink) in his presence ... so he said: In my opinion, if nabidh is in a waterskin, there is no harm in it, but I dislike nabidh in a green earthen pot.

It is narrated from Hazrat Malik bin Dinar that Hazrat Jabir bin Zaid and Hasan did not like the nabidh of a pitcher.

It is narrated from Hazrat Thabit. He says: I asked Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), "Is the use of Nabidh (fermented drink) made in a pitcher prohibited?" He replied, "That is what people think." I asked, "Is this ruling established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He replied, "That is what people think." I asked, "Did you hear this ruling from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He replied, "That is what people think." And he said, "Allah the Exalted has turned this away from me."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Jamrah that a woman came to Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them)… and I (the narrator) had taken an oath that I would not ask about the nabidh (fermented drink) of the pitcher… That woman said to me, "You, ask Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) about this." So I refused to ask Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) this question. Then some man asked about the nabidh of the pitcher. Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) forbade that man. Upon this, I asked, "O Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them)! I make nabidh in a green pitcher and then drink it while it is sweet and delicious, and it cleanses my stomach." So Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "Do not drink it, even if it is sweeter than honey."

It is narrated from Hazrat Tawoos that a man came to Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and asked him: Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibit the nabidh (fermented drink) of a pitcher? Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) replied: Yes. Hazrat Tawoos says: By Allah! I myself heard this from Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both).

Narrated from Hazrat Suhaira bint Jaifar, she says: We once performed Hajj and then returned towards Madinah and we visited Hazrat Safiyyah bint Huyayy. There we happened to meet some women from Kufa. They said to us: If you wish, we will ask questions and you listen silently, and if you wish, you may ask and we will listen. We said: You ask. So they asked about many matters between husband and wife, and about a menstruating woman. And they asked about the nabidh (fermented drink) made in a jar. Upon this, Hazrat Safiyyah said: O people of Iraq! You have asked us many questions about the nabidh of the jar, whereas the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) declared the nabidh of the jar to be forbidden. There is nothing wrong for any of you to cook your dates, then mix them, purify them, then put them in a waterskin and tie its mouth with a string or something, and when the drink becomes pleasant, you drink it yourself and give it to your husband to drink as well?

Hazrat Shumaisa Umm Salama Atkiya narrates, she says that I heard from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that you must never drink from large deep pitchers, jars, and artificial vessels made of gourds...

It is narrated from Hazrat Karima bint Hamam that she heard Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) say: "Beware, avoid the nabidh (fermented drink) of the green-colored pitcher."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdul A'la bin Kaysan. He says that I heard Ibn Abi Al-Hazil say that regarding the nabidh of a pitcher, nothing is in my heart except that Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz forbade it, and he was a just Imam.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them). He says: Do not drink the nabidh (fermented drink) of a pitcher.
