Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Malik bin Umair that Sa’sa’ah bin Sawhan came to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and greeted him with salam. Then he said, “O Commander of the Faithful! Forbid us from those things from which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade you.” Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from Dubba’ (a large vessel made from dried gourd), Hantam (a green or red vessel), Muqayyar (a vessel coated with pitch), and Ji’ah (an intoxicant made from barley or wheat).

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that he said: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade Dubba, Hantam, Muzaffat... a jar coated with tar, and Naqir... a vessel made by hollowing out the thick wood of a tree... (All these vessels were used for alcohol).

It is narrated from Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair, he says that I bear witness regarding Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) and Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) that both of them testified that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (the use of) Dubba, Hantam, Muzaffat, and Naqir.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah, he says that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade making nabidh in: muzaffat, dubba', hantam, and naqir.

It is narrated from Hazrat Amarah bin Asim Anzi, he says: I presented myself before Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) and I asked him about nabidh (fermented drink). He replied: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (the use of) dubba and muzaffat. So I (Amarah) asked Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) this question again, and he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade dubba and muzaffat. I repeated this question to Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), and again he replied: (He) forbade muzaffat.

It is narrated from Hazrat Samurah that he says: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade (the use of) dubba’ and muzaffat.

It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir, he says that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade (the use of) dubba, naqir, and muzaffat.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (the use of) Dubba, Hantam, and Muzaffat. The narrator says: I think he also mentioned Naqir.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), he says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon to the people one day: So when I came to the gathering, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had already finished delivering the sermon. I asked the people (about the sermon) what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said in the sermon? The people informed me that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had forbidden making nabidh (fermented drink) in muzaffat and qar’ (diba’) containers.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed that the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the nabidh (fermented drink) made in gourds, dubba, and vessels coated with pitch.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Ya'mar. He says that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade (the use of) Dubba, Muzaffat, and Hantam.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). She says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade Dubba, Hantam, and Muzaffat. And Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that Hantam is a jar that used to be brought from Egypt and wine was made in it.

Hazrat Ash'ath bin Umair Abdi narrates from his father. He says that a delegation of Abdul Qais came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When they intended to return, they said among themselves, "You have preserved all the things you heard from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So now, ask him about nabidh (a type of drink)." Thus, they went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We are in a land that is unsuitable, and only a particular drink suits us." The narrator says, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "What is your drink?" They said, "Nabidh." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "In what (vessel) do you drink it?" They said, "In naqir." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do not drink nabidh in naqir." The narrator says, so they went out and said to each other, "By Allah! Our people will not reconcile with us on this matter." So they returned and asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) this question again. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave them the same answer as before. They repeated the question once more, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them, "Do not drink nabidh in naqir, lest one of you strikes his cousin with this naqir and he remains lame until the Day of Judgment." The narrator says, upon this, they laughed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "What are you laughing at?" They replied, "By the One Who has sent you with the truth, indeed, we once drank nabidh in our naqir. Then one of us stood up and struck someone with this naqir, and that person became lame until the Day of Judgment because of that blow."

Hazrat Asma bint Yazid narrates from her cousin (who was called Anas) that he heard Hazrat Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) say: "Is it not the command of Allah: 'And whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it'?" The people said, "Of course." Then Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "Is it not the word of Allah: 'And when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, it is not for a believing man or a believing woman to have any choice in their affair'?" Then Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "I bear witness before you that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade nabidh (fermented drink) made in naqir, muzaffat, dubba', and hantam."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Shammar al-Duba'i, he says: I heard 'Aiz bin Amr forbidding (the use of) hantam, dubba', muzaffat, and naqir. Abu Shammar says: I asked 'Aiz, "Is this command from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He replied, "Yes."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah, he says that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade the use of nabidh made in gourds, muzaffat duba, and all types of vessels.

It is narrated from Hazrat Fudail bin Iyad, he says: We were with Abdullah bin Mughaffal when we mentioned wine to each other. Upon this, Hazrat Abdullah said: Wine is forbidden. I asked: Is the prohibition of wine in the Book of Allah? So Hazrat Abdullah said: What do you want? Do you want what I heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him? (So) I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prohibit (the use of) dubba’, hantam, and muzaffat.

Hazrat Kulayb bin Wa'il narrates: He says that the girl under the guardianship of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)—I think it was Zainab—narrated: She states that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (the use of) Dubba and Hantam. (The narrator says) I think Naqir was also mentioned in this.

It is narrated about Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila that he disliked muzaffat (pitch-coated vessels) and utensils. And he used to say: It is more beloved to me to drink the urine of a donkey than to drink anything from a muzaffat.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri, he says that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade (the use of) glazed vessels.

It is narrated from Hazrat Bara that he says Hazrat Umar ordered me on the day of Qadisiyyah to make this announcement: Nabidh will not be drunk in Dubba, Hantam, and Muzaffat.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdul Malik bin Nafi, he says: I asked Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about solid pitch. He replied: There is no harm in it. I asked: What if it is in a coated vessel? He replied: Do not drink nabidh in a coated vessel.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah that he forbade (the use of) glazed vessels.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (the use of) dubba, muzaffat, hantam, and naqir; and he also forbade mixing unripe dates with ripe dates.

It is narrated from Mukhtar bin Fulful, he says: I asked Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) about nabidh (fermented drink)? He replied: Avoid the intoxicating amount in everything, and as for any jug, waterskin, gourd (artificial vessel), and jar that has been coated, avoid even less than that amount from it.

Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib says that I heard Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) on this pulpit… Hazrat Saeed pointed towards the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)… saying that the delegation of Abdul Qais came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and they asked him about drinks. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade them from (using) dubba’, naqir, and hantam. I asked, “O Abu Muhammad! (Did he also forbid) muzaffat?” We think that you forgot it. So he replied, “I did not hear this from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) in the narration of that day.”

It is narrated from Hazrat Imran bin Husain that the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (the use of) hantam.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). She says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (the use of) dubba and muzaffat.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aswad. He says that I asked Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): From which drinks did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibit? So Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: He (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited (drinks made in) dubba’ and muzaffat. Ibrahim, the student of Aswad, says... I asked Hazrat Aswad: Are (drinks made in) hantam and green pitcher (also prohibited)? Do you want us to say what was not said?
