Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). She says that if a person is afflicted by a demon, magic, or suffers from epilepsy, he should come to the river Euphrates, face the direction of the water flow, and immerse himself in the river seven times.

It is narrated from Hazrat Zaid bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him). He says that a Jewish man cast a spell on the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) suffered from this for a few days, but then Hazrat Jibreel came to him and said, "Such-and-such a Jew has cast a spell on you and has tied some knots for you." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) towards those knots (the thread with knots), and Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) brought it and presented it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) untied a knot from those knots, he would feel lighter. The narrator says: Thus, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up as if he had been released from a restraint. But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never mentioned this matter to that Jewish man, nor did that Jew ever recognize anything from the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). She says that a Jew from among the Jews of Banu Zuraiq cast magic on the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), whose name was Labeed bin A'sam. (Its effect) was such that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would imagine that he had done something, although he had not done it. Until one time, whether it was day or night, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called out. Then he called out again, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her)! Do you know that Allah Almighty has informed me of the matter which I had asked Him about? Two men came to me, one sat by my head and the other by my feet. Then the one who was sitting by my head said to the one who was sitting by my feet, or the one by my feet said to the one by my head: What is the ailment of this man? The people said: He has been affected by magic. He then asked: Who has done magic on him? The other replied: Labeed bin A'sam. The first then asked: In what thing was the magic done? The other replied: In a comb, and the hair that comes out in it, and in a vessel made from the root of a male date-palm. The first then asked: Where are these things? The other said: In the well of Dhi Arwan." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to that well along with a group of his companions. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned and said: "O Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her)! It is as if its water is the water in which henna has been soaked, and its date-palms are as if they are the heads of devils." The narrator says: I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Why did you not have those things taken out? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, because Allah Almighty has granted me health, and I disliked to stir up any evil among the people because of it." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered regarding them, and they were buried.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira. He says that when Khyber was conquered, a goat was presented as a gift to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), in which poison had been mixed. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered, "Gather all the Jews who are here and bring them to me." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them, "Did you mix poison in this goat?" They replied, "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "What prompted you to do this?" They replied, "We wanted that if you are a liar, we would be relieved of you, and if you are (truly) a Prophet, then this (poisoning) would not harm you."

It is narrated about Hazrat Ata that he saw no harm in the case where a person has been bewitched, and that person has been bewitched by his family members. Both (cases) may go to someone who can remove it (the magic).

Hazrat Ismail bin Ayash narrates that I asked Hazrat Ata Khorasani about a person who is bewitched or afflicted by magic, whether he may go to someone who treats such conditions? Hazrat Ata replied: When a person is compelled to such an extent, then there is no harm in it.

Hazrat Qatadah narrates about Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib that I asked him: There is a man who has been affected by magic, can he be treated? Saeed replied: Yes. Whoever can benefit his brother should benefit him.
