Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them). He says that when a woman faces difficulty in childbirth, these two verses and words should be written on a page, then washed off and the water given to the woman to drink. (The translation of the words is as follows) In the name of Allah, besides whom there is no deity, who is Most Forbearing and Most Generous. Glory be to Allah, who is the Lord of the seven heavens and the Lord of the Great Throne. { کَأَنَّہُمْ یَوْمَ یَرَوْنَہَا لَمْ یَلْبَثُوا إِلاَّ عَشِیَّۃً ، أَوْ ضُحَاہَا } and { کَأَنَّہُمْ یَوْمَ یَرَوْنَ مَا یُوعَدُونَ لَمْ یَلْبَثُوا إِلاَّ سَاعَۃً مِنْ نَہَارٍ بَلاَغٌ فَہَلْ یُہْلَکُ إلاَّ الْقَوْمُ الْفَاسِقُونَ }.

It is narrated about Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she did not see any harm in performing incantations (dum, etc.) over water, and then that water would be poured over the patient.

It is narrated about Hazrat Abu Qalabah and Hazrat Mujahid that both of these personalities did not see any harm in writing a verse of the Holy Qur'an and then giving it to a frightened person to drink.

Hazrat Hajjaj says that the person who had seen Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair narrated to me that whoever came to him (for the purpose of an amulet), he would write an amulet for him. Hajjaj says: I asked Hazrat Ata, and he replied: O people of Iraq! We have not heard of anyone disliking this except from you.

Hazrat Qatadah reports about Saeed bin Al-Musayyib that I asked him about the amulet for possession, so he permitted me (to use it). I said to him: Should I narrate this (amulet) from you? He replied: Yes.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aswad that Ummul Momineen Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked about amulets for possession. In reply, she said: What do you make of this? Here is the river Euphrates near you. Let any one of you come into it, face the direction of the water's flow, and immerse himself seven times.
