Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hasan says that the shepherd will be held responsible except if the animals die.

Hazrat Aamir was asked: If the shepherd is a laborer, will he be held liable? He replied: No.

Hazrat Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the shepherd will be held responsible.

Hazrat Aamir says that there is no liability upon the shepherd.

Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib says that the shepherd will not be held liable.

The same is narrated from Hazrat Zuhri.

Hazrat Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I never saw Hazrat Shurayh except that he held the hired worker liable, except in the case of a person who borrowed grass on credit from another for two mules, then one of them ran away, so he did not hold him liable.

Ibrahim says that if the shepherd is for several people, then he will be liable, and if he is only your shepherd, then there is no liability upon him.

Hazrat Zuhri says that the shepherd will not be held liable.
