Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent two captive children with me, so that I might sell them. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) inquired, "Did you sell them together or separately?" I replied, "Separately." He said, "Catch them (i.e., bring them back)."

Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote: Do not separate two brothers; sell them together, or keep them together with you.

Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to the officials: Do not separate a slave woman and her children.

Hazrat Usman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Iqal to buy one hundred slaves belonging to the same family and take them towards Madinah, but do not buy any slave among them whose purchase would result in separation between him and his parents.

It is narrated from Hazrat Habib bin Shahab that he participated in jihad with Hazrat Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him). When the place of Tustar was conquered, they did not separate women and their children at the time of selling.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Jablah al-Qurashi that they used to separate the captives; Hazrat Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) came and gathered all those slaves together.

Ibrahim, (the companions) would not sell slaves out of fear that separation might occur between a son and his father or between brothers. They disliked selling slaves for this reason.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) that when a child was brought to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he would give the child to all the members of the household so that there would be no distinction among them.

Hasan and Muhammad disliked separating a slave woman from her child.

Hasan disliked this, and used to say that if he reaches the age of puberty, then there is no harm in separating them.

The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade separating a slave girl and her child at the time of sale.

Hazrat Ibn Aun says that I wrote to Hazrat Nafi' and asked him if, when some members of the same household are slaves of someone, can they be separated from each other at the time of sale? He replied, "I do not consider it unlawful, but it is disliked."

Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz wrote to Hazrat Riyah bin Ubaidah to sell the royal slaves. But slaves belonging to one family should be sold together so that they are not separated.

Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote that when selling prisoners and their children, do not separate them from each other.

Ibn Sirin narrates that it has reached me that a son of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) complained to him, saying: "You consider it disliked to separate a child from his mother, yet you have separated me from my mother."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ja'far that when captive children were brought to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him), he (peace be upon him) would grant a slave and children of the same family to that family, so that they would not be separated from each other.
