Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Muhammad that if a mukatab intends to pay his entire contract price at once, but his master says, "I will take it in installments (little by little)," Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered the slave to be freed and took the money from him, saying, "I will take it little by little." When the master saw this situation, he accepted the entire amount at once.

A case was brought to Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that a mukatab (contracted slave) had brought his entire payment for his freedom at once, but the master said, "I will not accept it all at once. I made him a mukatab so that I could receive the payment gradually over two years as my livelihood, and during this period, if he dies, I would become his heir." Hazrat Umar ordered that the money be taken from him and placed in the public treasury (Bayt al-Mal), then given to his master in installments, and he decreed freedom for the slave.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Bakr bin Amr bin Hazm that a man made his slave a mukatab (contracted for freedom), and set the condition that the payment for the contract of freedom would be made in installments. The mukatab brought the entire payment for the contract of freedom at once, but his master refused to accept the whole amount together. The mukatab then presented himself before Hazrat Umar, who summoned his master. When he came, Hazrat Umar presented the entire amount to him, but he refused to accept it. Hazrat Umar said, "O Yarfa! Place this money in the treasury (Bait-ul-Mal), and let the master receive it from the treasury in installments." And to the slave he said, "Go, you are free."
