Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The one who consumes interest and the one who gives it are both equal in sin.

Hazrat Ka'b Ahbar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "It is more preferable to me to commit adultery thirty-three times than to consume one dirham of usury. When I consume that usury, my Allah knows that I am consuming usury."

Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The one who consumes usury and the one who gives it are equal in sin. And the one who writes usurious transactions and the one who becomes a witness to it, when they know about it, and the woman who beautifies by tattooing and the one who gets herself tattooed, and the one who misuses charity. And among the Bedouins, whoever became an apostate after migration, upon him the curse was pronounced by the blessed tongue of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) said: All the doors of usury have been closed upon you. So you seek its prohibition. (You desire it.)

It is narrated from Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Curse has been invoked upon the one who consumes usury, the one who gives it, the one who records its transactions, and the witnesses to it.

Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that if the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had explained three things for us, it would have been more beloved to me than the world and whatever is in it: one is the caliphate, the second is kalalah (that is, a deceased person who has neither children nor parents), and the third thing is usury.

Hazrat Aamir narrates that I heard Hazrat Nu’man bin Basheer (may Allah be pleased with him) delivering a sermon, in such a state that he had inserted his fingers into his ears. He said: I myself heard from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with these ears, that he said: Halal is clear and haram is clear, and between them are some doubtful matters. Whoever avoids the doubtful matters has protected his religion and honor. And whoever falls into the doubtful matters falls into haram, just like a shepherd who grazes his animals around a sanctuary; soon they will enter it. Beware! Every king has a sanctuary, and Allah’s sanctuary is His prohibited things. Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body; if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Listen! That is the heart.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that one dirham of usury is, in the sight of Allah Almighty, worse than committing adultery thirty-six times.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Usury has seventy sins, the least of which is that a man commits adultery (marries) with his own mother, and the greatest usury is that a man violates the honor of his brother.

Hazrat Aamir says that I read in the letter of the people of Najran, it was written in it: If you consume usury, there will be no peace between you and us, and the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) did not make peace with those who consumed usury.

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him), in the commentary of the Holy Qur'an verse { الَّذِینَ یَأْکُلُونَ الرِّبَا لاَ یَقُومُونَ إلاَّ کَمَا یَقُومُ الَّذِی یَتَخَبَّطُہُ الشَّیْطَانُ مِنَ الْمَسِّ }, states that these people will be raised as madmen on the Day of Resurrection and their throats will be strangled.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Juhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed both the one who takes usury and the one who gives it.

Hazrat Sha’bi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon, praised Allah Almighty, and then said: Indeed, I command you regarding some things which may not be beneficial for you, and I forbid you from some things which may be beneficial for you. Indeed, the last covenant that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took from us was concerning the verse of usury. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from this world and did not explain its details to us. Indeed, this is also usury and also doubtful. Therefore, leave the doubtful thing and choose the one that is not doubtful. Hazrat Sha’bi was asked about something, and he replied that this is usury and also doubtful, so leave the things that involve usury and those that lead to doubt.

Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I fear that while avoiding usury, we may end up committing ten times more sins.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Yazid Ansari sent his servant with four thousand dirhams; the servant went to Isfahan and engaged in trade until he had twenty thousand dirhams. Then the servant passed away. It was said to Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the servant used to mix usury in the trade. He (may Allah have mercy on him) took back only the original four thousand and left the remaining money, not taking it.

Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that there are more than seventy doors of usury, and shirk (associating partners with Allah) is also similar to it.
