Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) that the delegation of Thaqeef came to the service of the Holy Prophet ﷺ. They presented some gifts to him. The Holy Prophet ﷺ inquired, "Is this a gift or charity?" They replied, "It is a gift." The Holy Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, with a gift, the pleasure of Allah's Messenger is sought and needs are fulfilled, and with charity, the pleasure of Allah is sought." They said, "No, this is indeed a gift." The Holy Prophet ﷺ accepted it from them. And they kept the Prophet occupied for the entire time of Zuhr (i.e., they remained sitting with him) until he ﷺ performed Zuhr together with Asr.

Hazrat Hisham bin Urwah narrates that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ used to accept gifts and would give something in return.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ayyub bin Maysarah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Give a gift to the one who does not give you a gift. And visit the one who does not visit you when you are ill.

It is narrated from Hazrat Buraidah that when Hazrat Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived in Madinah, he brought a gift in a plate to the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and placed it before him. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "What is this?" Hazrat Salman replied, "It is charity for you and your companions." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I do not eat charity." He had the gift taken away (i.e., returned it). Then the next day, he brought it in the same way. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "What is this?" Hazrat Salman replied, "It is a gift for you." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the companions (may Allah be pleased with them), "Eat."

Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me something. I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Please give it to someone who is more in need than me. The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Take it, or you may collect it, or you may give it in charity. Whatever wealth comes to you without you asking for it or seeking it, then take it, and whatever does not come to you without asking, do not pursue it.

Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent some wealth to me, which I returned. Then when I presented myself before the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he inquired: What made you return the wealth I had sent to you? I replied, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! You had told me: It is better for you not to take anything from people. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That is when you ask people yourself. Whatever comes to you without you asking for it is sustenance granted by Allah, which Allah is bestowing upon you.

Hazrat Aswad (may Allah have mercy on him) gifted a she-camel to Hazrat Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him), which he accepted.

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) gifted a she-camel to Aswad (may Allah have mercy on him). He (Aswad) asked Alqamah (may Allah be pleased with him) about it, saying, "What is your opinion?" Alqamah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "Your brother has honored you; in my opinion, you should accept it." So Aswad accepted it.

Hazrat A’mash says that sometimes Hazrat Abu Al-Haitham Ibrahim would present a bundle of cane/bamboo sticks as a gift, which he would accept.

Hazrat A'mash says that Ibrahim was given a sweet syrup as a gift. He, may Allah have mercy on him, threw it away (discarded it).

It is narrated from Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Give gifts to one another, as this removes envy. And shake hands with one another, as this removes malice and hatred.

Hazrat Qais bin Yasir bin Amr narrates from his father that Hazrat Uwais Qarni was without clothes, so my father gifted him some clothes. He accepted them.

Hazrat Muhammad bin Wasi’ al-Azdi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Wealth is not lawful except in four cases: the spoils of war of the Muslims, lawful trade, a gift from a Muslim brother, or a share of inheritance according to the Book of Allah.

Hazrat Mujahid was asked that if two people want to give wealth to a person, one of them is a Muslim brother and the other is a relative of the king, whose should he accept? He, may Allah have mercy on him, replied: From the relative.

Hazrat Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When any of you is given a gift by your brother, then accept his gift. Then, if he is in need, he should use it. And if he is independent (wealthy), then he should give it to someone in need (spend it on him).

It is narrated from Hazrat A’mash that the wife of Hazrat Musayyib, may Allah have mercy on him, gave birth to a child. Hazrat Khaythamah arranged a wet nurse for them, and if I am invited to eat porridge, I will accept it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not refuse a gift, accept the invitation of the one who invites you, and do not harm the Muslims.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: If I am given a piece of cloth as a gift, I certainly accept it. And if I am invited to eat a trotter, I will accept the invitation.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Give to the one who asks you for the sake of Allah. And if someone gifts you even the leg of a goat, accept it.

Hazrat Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I brought a gift in a plate to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the companions (may Allah be pleased with them), "Eat."

It is narrated from Hazrat Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The best thing is to give a gift at the time of need.
