Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: If a judge accepts a gift, he has consumed what is unlawful, and if he takes a bribe, he has reached the point of disbelief.

Hazrat Mu'adh bin Alaa narrates from his father and grandfather that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon in Kufa and there was a bottle in his hand. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Since I became the caliph, I have received only this one gift, which a peasant has sent to me.

It is narrated from Hazrat Yusuf bin Muhajir that the commander of the army sent a gift of forty thousand, or a little less, or a little more, to Abdul Hameed. He wrote to Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him). Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz wrote: If you received the gift when you were in Jazirah, then accept it; otherwise, I will consider it as tribute from his side.

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The ruling on bribery is that it is forbidden.

Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that there are two doors of the unlawful from which people consume: one is bribery and the other is the earnings from the dowry of an adulteress.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Murrah narrates from his father, who says that I asked Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) about what is unlawful (haram). He (may Allah have mercy on him) replied: It is bribery.

Hazrat Abu Saeed (may Allah have mercy on him) says: The gifts of the rulers are a betrayal.

Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about the gifts of the rulers. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In my opinion, this is betrayal.

Hazrat Tawus says that this is forbidden.

It is narrated from Hazrat Shaqiq that Hazrat Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) brought slaves from Yemen during the caliphate of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him). Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Give these slaves to him." Hazrat Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, "Why should I give my slaves to him?" Then Hazrat Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) went to his house and did not take the slaves to Siddiq Akbar (may Allah be pleased with him). He spent the night, and when the next morning came, he gave the slaves to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: "What appeared to you that you did this?" Hazrat Mu'adh replied: "I saw myself in a dream that fire was near me and I was being pushed into it. Then you caught me by the waistband and saved me from falling into the fire. I think all this was because of those slaves." Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "All these slaves are yours." Then when Hazrat Mu'adh went home and stood up to pray, he saw that the slaves were also praying behind him. Hazrat Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "For whom are you praying?" They replied: "For Allah." Hazrat Mu'adh said: "Go, you are free for the sake of Allah."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Humaid Al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Ibn Al-Lutbiyyah as the collector over the charity of Banu Sulaym. When he returned, he said, "This is for you and this is a gift for me." The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, praised and glorified Allah, and then said: "What is the matter with some people whom we appoint as officials over some of the affairs which Allah has entrusted to us? Then one of them comes and says: 'This is for you and this is a gift for me.' If he is truthful, why does he not sit in the house of his father or mother so that the gift may come to him there?"

Hazrat Adi bin Umairah al-Kindi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: If any of you is appointed over a task and then he hides a needle or more from it, then this is a betrayal which will be brought forth on the Day of Resurrection. A black man from among the Ansar stood up in such a state that it is as if I am seeing him. He said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Take back the task you assigned to me." The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked, "What is that?" He replied, "I heard you say such and such." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: I now say it again. If any of you is appointed over a task, he should bring whatever is little or much to us. Whatever is given to him from it, he may take, and whatever is withheld from him, he should refrain from.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) by Ibn Rabee’ah that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) appointed a man from Banu Asad as an official. His name was Dabi’ah bin Zuhair or Zuhair bin Dabi’ah. When he returned, he said: O Commander of the Faithful! I have been given many gifts. I have brought all of them to you. If they are lawful for me, I will consume them. Otherwise, I give them to you. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) took them from him and said: If you had kept them with you, it would have been a betrayal.

Hazrat Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who gives a bribe, the one who takes a bribe, and anyone who acts as an intermediary between them.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the one who gives a bribe and the one who takes a bribe.

Hazrat Yahya bin Saeed (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that when the Prophet of Allah ﷺ sent Hazrat Ibn Rawaha (may Allah be pleased with him) to Khaybar, they gave him gifts. He (may Allah be pleased with him) returned them and said, "This is forbidden."

Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to the people of Iraq: The gifts of our chiefs and landlords are for us (that is, send them to us and do not keep them with yourselves).

Hazrat Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) said that curse has been invoked upon the one who gives and the one who takes a bribe.
