Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Ibrahim says that if a slave with permission becomes insolvent, then his debt is upon him; his master has the choice, if he wishes, he may sell this slave and distribute the price among the creditors; nothing more than his price is obligatory upon the master.

Hasan says that if the creditor wants to sell him, they may sell him; if they want to make him work, they may make him work.

Hazrat Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) and Hazrat Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) say that if the creditor wants to sell him, he may sell him; if he wants to make him work, he may make him work.

Hazrat Hakam (may Allah have mercy on him) says that as long as the debt does not encompass his entire ownership, it will not be sold.

A slave who was in debt was brought to Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Azniyyah (may Allah have mercy on him). He said: His wealth is with his debt, his wealth is with his debt.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) said that his debt is in its price.

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said that a slave will not be sold for a debt, even if he owes a hundred thousand in debt.

Ibrahim says that in the case of debt, a slave will be made to work but will not be sold.

Hazrat Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) says: If a master gives permission to his slave to take a loan, then it is permissible for the creditors to sell the slave.
