Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) says regarding a permitted slave that if he is in debt and his master sets him free, then the slave will try to pay off the creditors’ debts; freedom has not increased him in anything except his capacity.

A slave whom the master has permitted to engage in trade, then he becomes indebted and his master also sets him free. Regarding this slave, Hammad (may Allah have mercy on him) says that his master will be liable for the price of this slave. And Sufyan (may Allah have mercy on him) says that his creditors will continue to pursue him for the remaining debt until he pays it off.

Hazrat Imam Zuhri, may Allah have mercy on him, says regarding the slave who becomes destitute and his master sets him free, that setting him free is permissible and the master will be responsible for his price.

Hazrat Hammad (may Allah have mercy on him) says that if the master sets him free, then the master is responsible for the payment of the debt.

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said that he will strive to pay off the creditors’ debts, and freedom did not add anything except his ability.
