Can a Man Arrange His Sister’s Marriage?
Hadith 18291
١٨٢٩١ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: نا ابن نمير عن حماد (بن) (١) أبي الدرداء ⦗٥٤٠⦘ قال: سألت الشعبي عن رجل (زوّج) (٢) أختا له (بواسط) (٣) فكرهت؟ قال: هي أحق بنفسها قلت: (إنه) (٤) أخوها لأبيها وأمها قال: هي أحق بنفسها من أبيها إذا كرهت.
Hazrat Hammad bin Abi Darda’ (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Hazrat Sha’bi (may Allah have mercy on him) whether a person can marry off his sister while she dislikes it? He replied that the girl has more right over herself than her brother. I asked, what if he is her real brother, then what is the ruling? He replied that if the girl dislikes the proposal, then she has more right over herself than even her father.
Hadith 18292
١٨٢٩٢ - حدثنا غندر عن أشعث عن الحسن في رجل زوج أخته وأبوها غائب قال: الأمر إلى أبيها.
Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said that if a person arranges the marriage of his sister in the absence of their father, then the matter will be referred to their father.
