Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Jabir narrates that the Jews used to say that when a man has intercourse with a woman from behind, the child becomes cross-eyed. Upon this, the verse of the Holy Qur'an: { نِسَاؤُکُمْ حَرْثٌ لَکُمْ } "Your wives are your fields" was revealed.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), regarding the verse of the Holy Qur'an: { نِسَاؤُکُمْ حَرْثٌ لَکُمْ } "Your women are your fields," says that whoever wishes to practice coitus interruptus may do so, and whoever does not wish to, may refrain.

Hazrat Ikrimah says that a man may have intercourse with his wife in any manner he wishes, whether standing or sitting, but he may not commit sodomy.

Hazrat Abu Salih, regarding the verse of the Holy Qur'an: { نِسَاؤُکُمْ حَرْثٌ لَکُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَکُمْ أَنَّی شِئْتُمْ } "Your wives are your fields, so come to your fields as you wish," says that if you wish, you may approach lying down, or if you wish, on the side, or if you wish, on the knees—you may have intercourse in any of these ways.

Hazrat Abu Razin, regarding the verse of the Holy Qur'an: { نِسَاؤُکُمْ حَرْثٌ لَکُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَکُمْ أَنَّی شِئْتُمْ } "Your wives are your fields; so come to your fields as you wish," states that approach from the side of purity and do not approach from the side of menstruation.

Hazrat Dhahhak, regarding the verse of the Holy Qur'an: { نِسَاؤُکُمْ حَرْثٌ لَکُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَکُمْ أَنَّی شِئْتُمْ } "Your wives are your fields; so come to your fields as you wish," states that approach from the side of purity and do not approach from the side of menstruation.

Hazrat Mujahid, regarding the verse of the Holy Qur'an: { نِسَاؤُکُمْ حَرْثٌ لَکُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَکُمْ أَنَّی شِئْتُمْ } "Your women are your fields; so come to your fields as you wish," states that except for the anus and during menstruation, you may come as you wish.

Hazrat Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that when the Muhajirun came to Madinah, they married Ansari women. The Muhajir men would make the women sit on their knees and place their heads on the ground during intercourse, whereas the Ansar did not do so. One Ansari woman said to her husband that this matter should be asked of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). The woman was shy to ask, so I asked, and the Prophet recited this verse of the Holy Qur'an: { نِسَاؤُکُمْ حَرْثٌ لَکُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَکُمْ أَنَّی شِئْتُمْ } "Your wives are your fields; go to your fields as you wish." Then he said that the place of entry is only one.

Hazrat Marrah Hamdani narrates that once a Jew met a Muslim and said to him, "Do you have intercourse with your wives from behind?" He thus expressed dislike for the manner in which a man stands behind and enters his wife's private part. On this occasion, this verse of the Holy Qur'an was revealed: { نِسَاؤُکُمْ حَرْثٌ لَکُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَکُمْ أَنَّی شِئْتُمْ } "Your wives are your fields; so come to your fields as you wish." In this verse, Allah Almighty has given Muslims permission that they may have intercourse with their wives' private parts in any manner they wish, whether from the front or from behind.

Hazrat Marrah, regarding the verse of the Holy Qur’an { نِسَاؤُکُمْ حَرْثٌ لَکُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَکُمْ أَنَّی شِئْتُمْ } “Your women are your fields; so come to your fields as you wish,” says that the Jews used to mock the Muslims, saying that they have intercourse with their women from behind. On this occasion, Allah Almighty revealed this verse: { نِسَاؤُکُمْ حَرْثٌ لَکُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَکُمْ أَنَّی شِئْتُمْ } “Your women are your fields; so come to your fields as you wish,” meaning, have intercourse in their private parts in any manner you wish.

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair, regarding the verse of the Holy Qur'an { نِسَاؤُکُمْ حَرْثٌ لَکُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَکُمْ أَنَّی شِئْتُمْ } "Your wives are your fields; so come to your fields as you wish," states that one should not commit sodomy, but apart from that, one may have relations with his wife as he wishes.

Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib, regarding the verse of the Holy Qur'an { نِسَاؤُکُمْ حَرْثٌ لَکُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَکُمْ أَنَّی شِئْتُمْ } "Your wives are your fields; so come to your fields as you wish," says that if you wish, practice coitus interruptus, and if you wish, do not.

Hasan narrates that the polytheists used to mock the Muslims, saying that there are many hardships for you, as you can have intercourse with your wives only from one side. On this occasion, this verse of the Holy Qur'an was revealed: { نِسَاؤُکُمْ حَرْثٌ لَکُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَکُمْ أَنَّی شِئْتُمْ } "Your wives are your fields; so come to your fields as you wish."

Hazrat Ikrimah, in the explanation of the verse of the Holy Qur'an { نِسَاؤُکُمْ حَرْثٌ لَکُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَکُمْ أَنَّی شِئْتُمْ } "Your wives are your fields; so come to your fields as you wish," says that it means from the front (vaginal intercourse).

Hazrat Abu Dhara says that I asked Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) about the verse of the Holy Qur'an { نِسَاؤُکُمْ حَرْثٌ لَکُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَکُمْ أَنَّی شِئْتُمْ } "Your wives are your fields; so come to your fields as you wish." He replied that it means if you wish, you may practice coitus interruptus, and if you wish, you may not.

Hazrat Mujahid, regarding the verse of the Holy Qur'an { نِسَاؤُکُمْ حَرْثٌ لَکُمْ فَأْتُوا حَرْثَکُمْ أَنَّی شِئْتُمْ } "Your wives are your fields; so come to your fields as you wish," says that you may have intercourse with your wives in any manner you wish in their private parts.
