Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair, regarding the command of Allah Almighty { مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ اِلَیْہِ سَبِیْلًا }, says that whoever possesses provisions for the journey and a means of transport, Hajj is obligatory upon him.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man stood before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What makes Hajj obligatory?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Provision for the journey and a means of transport." The man asked, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What is Hajj?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Becoming dusty and disheveled." The man asked, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Which Hajj is the best?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "The one in which Talbiyah is recited aloud and an animal is sacrificed."

Hazrat Mujahid says that by { مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ اِلَیْہِ سَبِیْلًا } is meant provisions for the journey and a mount.

Hazrat Ibn Zubair says that as much food as is sufficient to gain strength and power.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding the statement of Allah Almighty { مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ اِلَیْہِ سَبِیْلًا } says that what is meant is provision for the journey and a means of transport.

It is narrated from Hasan that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Hajj is obligatory upon the one who has provisions for the journey and a means of transportation.

It is narrated from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in the same manner.

Hasan, regarding the statement of Allah Almighty { مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ اِلَیْہِ سَبِیْلًا }, says that by "as-sabeel" is meant provisions for the journey and a riding animal.

Hazrat Umar, regarding the command of Allah Ta'ala { مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ اِلَیْہِ سَبِیْلًا }, says that provisions for the journey and a means of transport are meant, and Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that whoever finds the means and there is nothing (an obstacle) between him and it, Hazrat Ata said that "sabeela" (the way) is as Allah Ta'ala has commanded.

Hazrat Ata says that what is meant is provisions for the journey and a riding animal.

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair says: If one has provisions for the journey and a means of transport, then Hajj is obligatory.

It is narrated in a similar manner from Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair.

It is narrated from Hasan that a person submitted, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What is the way to it?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "He should have provisions and a mount."

Hazrat Ibn Zubair says that by Allah Almighty’s command { مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ اِلَیْہِ سَبِیْلًا }, what is meant is according to human ability.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) states that whoever possesses three hundred dirhams, Hajj becomes obligatory upon him, and marrying slave women becomes forbidden for him.

Hazrat Muammar bin Khathim says that I asked Hazrat Abu Ja'far, "May Allah have mercy on you, what is meant by { مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ اِلَیْہِ سَبِیْلًا }?" He replied, "That you have a mount and some provisions for the journey, so sometimes you walk and sometimes you ride."
