Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ibn Jurayj says that I asked Hazrat Ata, "Allah the Exalted has said, { وَالْبُدْنَ جَعَلْنَاہَا لَکُمْ مِنْ شَعَائِرِ اللہِ }, what is meant by 'al-budnah'?" He replied: "Camel and cow."

Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib says that by this is meant the camel and the cow.

Hazrat Mujahid says: Al-badan should be only from among the camels.

Hazrat Qasim bin Muhammad says that a goat will not be counted among the sacrificial animals; indeed, a cow is also included among the budn (large sacrificial animals).

Hazrat Abdul Kareem says that there was a difference of opinion between Hazrat Ata and Hazrat Hakam regarding this matter. Hazrat Ata says that it should be from cows and camels, and Hazrat Hakam says that it should be only from camels.

It is narrated from Yaqub that a person from my neighborhood passed away and he made a will that a sacrificial camel (badnah) should be offered on his behalf. I asked Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) whether a cow could be slaughtered instead. He replied, "It will suffice." He then asked, "Which tribe are you from?" I replied, "From Banu Rabah." He said, "How did Banu Rabah come to have cows? Cows are found with the Azd and the tribe of Abd Qais."
