Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) bought a camel, but it got lost. She then bought another camel in its place, and later the first one was also found. She sacrificed both camels and said that Allah knew that I would sacrifice both, and this will be considered as a voluntary (nafl) act.

It is narrated from Hazrat Urwah that Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) slaughtered both camels.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ma'iz bin Malik Thaqafi that my respected father sent two sacrificial animals on his own behalf, on behalf of his wife, and on behalf of his daughter. They got lost when they reached the place of Dhu al-Majaz. When the day of sacrifice arrived, everyone mentioned this to Hazrat Umar. He said: Wait for today, tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow, for indeed these are the three days of sacrifice. If your animals are found, then slaughter both of them, and if they are not found, then on the third day buy two other animals in their place and slaughter them, and do not come out of Ihram until you have slaughtered them. Then, if after slaughtering the purchased sacrificial animals, the original animals are also found, then slaughter them as well.

Hazrat Abu Al-Khasib Al-Qaisi sent a sacrificial animal as Hadi on behalf of his mother, but it got lost on the way. He then bought another animal in its place and put a collar on it. Meanwhile, the first animal was also found. He asked Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) about this. He replied: "Slaughter both of them."

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) said: Both animals will be slaughtered.

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) sent two camels as Hadi (sacrificial animals), but they got lost on the way. Hazrat Ibn Zubair sent two camels for her for sacrifice, and she slaughtered them. Then the previous two camels were also found by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), so she slaughtered both of them as well.

Hazrat Nafi bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I took a camel to give it water, but it got lost. So I took another camel in its place and performed the sacrifice. Later, I found the first camel again. I asked Hazrat Urwah bin Zubair about this matter. He replied that the she-camel is in place of the camel.

Hazrat Tawus says that only the first animal should be sacrificed.

Hazrat Qabeesah bin Dhuwaiyb asked Hazrat Abu Bakr bin Abu Jahm? He replied, "Slaughter both animals together."

Hazrat Ata says that if the first animal (the lost one) was nafl (supererogatory), then he will slaughter both; and if the first animal was wajib (obligatory), then he will slaughter only that one, and regarding the second animal, it is up to him—if he wishes, he may slaughter it, and if he wishes, he may not.

Hasan and Hazrat Ata state that if the animal for a voluntary sacrifice is lost and he buys another in its place and puts a collar on it as well, then now he will slaughter both. And if he has not yet put a collar on it, then if he wishes, he can sell it.
