Who is permitted to use perfume during ihram?
Hadith 13973
١٣٩٧٣ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا جرير عن منصور عن إبراهيم عن الأسود عن عائشة (قالت) (١): (لكأني) (٢) انظر إلى وبيص الطيب (من) (٣) رأس رسول اللَّه ⦗٨١⦘ ﷺ وهو [(محرم) (٤) (٥).
Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that it is as if I am seeing the shine of fragrance in the blessed hair of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), even though the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the state of Ihram.
Hadith 13974
١٣٩٧٤ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا أبو معاوية عن الأعمش عن إبراهيم عن الأسود عن عائشة قالت: كأني أنظر إلى وبيص الطيب في مفارق رسول اللَّه ﷺ وهو] (١) يهل (٢).
Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that it is as if I am seeing the shine of fragrance on the parting of the hair of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), even though he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the state of Ihram.
Hadith 13975
١٣٩٧٥ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا شريك عن أبي إسحاق عن الأسود عن عائشة أن رسول اللَّه ﷺ كان يتطيب قبل أن (يحرم) (١)، فيرى أثر الطيب في مفرقه بعد ذلك بثلاث (٢).
It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to apply perfume before entering into the state of Ihram, and then the effect of that perfume would remain and be visible in the parting of his hair for three days.
Hadith 13976
١٣٩٧٦ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا أبو الأحوص عن أبي إسحاق (عن الأسود) (١) عن عائشة أن رسول اللَّه ﷺ كان إذا أراد أن يحرم أدهن (بأطيب دهن) (٢) يجده، حتى أرى وبيصه في لحيته (ورأسه) (٣) (٤).
It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to enter into the state of Ihram, he would apply the best fragrance, to the extent that the brightness of this fragrance could be seen in his blessed beard and blessed head.
Hadith 13977
١٣٩٧٧ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا سفيان بن عيينة عن عثمان بن عروة عن أبيه قال: سألت عائشة بأي شيء طيبت رسول اللَّه ﷺ؟ (قالت) (١): بأطيب الطيب، وقالت: عند (إهلاله) (٢) قبل أن يحرم (٣).
Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked which fragrance she used to apply to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). She replied, "The best fragrance," and said that she used to apply it to him before he entered the state of Ihram.
Hadith 13978
١٣٩٧٨ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا ابن فضيل عن عطاء بن السائب عن إبراهيم عن الأسود عن عائشة قالت: رأيت بصيص الطيب في مفارق رسول اللَّه ﷺ بعد ثلاث وهو محرم (١).
Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that three days later, I saw the shine of fragrance in the parting of the hair of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), even though he was in the state of Ihram.
Hadith 13979
١٣٩٧٩ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا ابن عيينة عن عبد الرحمن بن القاسم عن أبيه عن عائشة بسطت (يديها وقالت) (١): (طيبته) (٢) بيدي هاتين (محرمه) (٣) حين أحرم، (محله) (٤) قبل أن يطوف بالبيت (٥).
Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) spread both her hands and said: With these hands of mine, I used to apply fragrance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) before he entered into the state of Ihram, and I used to apply fragrance to his clothes other than the Ihram before he performed the Tawaf of the House of Allah.
Hadith 13980
١٣٩٨٠ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا شريك عن عمار عن مسلم البطين أن الحسين بن علي كان إذا أحرم ادهن بالزيت و (دهن) (١) أصحابه بالطيب ⦗٨٣⦘ (أو) (٢) بدهن الطيب (٣).
When Hazrat Husain bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to enter into Ihram, he would apply perfumed oil, and his other companions would also apply perfume or use incense.
Hadith 13981
١٣٩٨١ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا أبو أسامة عن (هاشم) (١) (بن هاشم) (٢) عن عائشة ابنة سعد (قالت) (٣): كان سعد يتطيب عند الإحرام بالذريرة (٤).
Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), daughter of Sa’d, narrates that Hazrat Sa’d used to apply Zurairah perfume when assuming Ihram.
Hadith 13982
١٣٩٨٢ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا وكيع عن محمد بن قيس عن الشعبي قال: كان عبد اللَّه بن جعفر (يمرت) (١) المسك، ثم يجعله على يافوخة قبل أن يحرم (٢).
Hazrat Abdullah bin Ja'far used to rub musk on his hands and would apply it to the middle of his head before putting on the Ihram.
Hadith 13983
١٣٩٨٣ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا وكيع عن علي بن صالح عن كثير بن (سام) (١) عن ابن الحنفية أنه كان يغلف رأسه بالغالية الجيدة إذا أراد أن يحرم.
Whenever Ibn al-Hanafiyyah intended to enter into the state of Ihram, he would rub a high-quality mixture of perfumes (ghaliyah) on his head.
Hadith 13984
١٣٩٨٤ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا أبو أسامة عن أسامة عن عبد الرحمن بن القاسم عن أمه قالت: رأيت عائشة (تنكت) (١) في مفارقها (الطيب) (٢) قبل أن تحرم ثم تحرم (٣).
The mother of Abdur Rahman bin Qasim narrates that I saw Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) applying perfume between her hair before entering into Ihram, and then she entered into Ihram.
Hadith 13985
١٣٩٨٥ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا وكيع عن ابن أبي ذئب عن مسلم (بن) (١) أبي مريم عن عمر بن عبد العزيز أنه كان يدهن (بالسليخة) (٢) عند الإحرام.
Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz used to apply a perfume called Sulaikha at the time of putting on Ihram.
Hadith 13986
١٣٩٨٦ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا حماد بن مسعدة عن عيسى بن حفص عن عثمان بن عروة قال: كان عروة (يجمر) (١) ثيابه (عشاء) (٢) فلا يزال حتى يروح فيها المسجد ويحرم فيها، قال: وكان يرى لحانا تقطر من الغالية ونحن محرمون فلا ينكر (ذلك) (٣) علينا.
Hazrat Urwah would perfume his clothes with incense at night and would remain in those clothes; he would even go to the mosque in them and would don the ihram in those same clothes. The narrator says that drops of musk fragrance would be seen dripping from our beards while we were in the state of ihram, but he would not object to this.
Hadith 13987
١٣٩٨٧ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا أبو معاوية عن الأعمش عن أبي الضحى قال: رأيت عبد اللَّه بن الزبير وفي رأسه ولحيته من الطيب وهو محرم، ما لو كان لرجل لا تخذ منه رأس مال (١).
Hazrat Abu al-Duha narrates that I saw the effect of fragrance in the hair and beard of Hazrat Abdullah bin Zubair, even though he was in the state of Ihram. The fragrance was so expensive that if someone else had it, he would have accumulated a lot of wealth from it.
Hadith 13988
١٣٩٨٨ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا عبدة بن سليمان عن هشام بن عروة أن ابن الزبير كان يدهن عند إحرامه بالغالية الجيدة (١).
Hazrat Ibn Zubair would perfume himself with high-quality musk incense when assuming Ihram.
Hadith 13989
١٣٩٨٩ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا أبو أسامة عن هشام بن عروة قال: كان أبي يتطيب عند الإحرام (بالذريرة) (١) والبان.
Hazrat Urwah used to apply the perfumes named Zurairah and Alban at the time of putting on Ihram.
Hadith 13990
١٣٩٩٠ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا عبدة بن سليمان عن سعيد عن قتادة أن ابن عباس كان لا يرى بأسًا بالطيب عند إحرامه، ويوم النحر قبل أن يزور (١).
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) did not consider it objectionable to apply perfume at the time of wearing Ihram, nor did he consider it objectionable to apply it before performing Tawaf of the House of Allah on the Day of Sacrifice.
Hadith 13991
١٣٩٩١ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا وكيع عن (١) عيينة بن عبد الرحمن عن أبيه عن ابن عباس قال: (إني) (٢) (لأصغصغه) (٣) في رأسي قبل أن أحرم، وأحب بقاه (٤).
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that before entering into Ihram, I like to apply perfume to my head and comb it, and I prefer that its effect remains. And Hazrat Ibn Zubair says that I do not consider there to be any harm in it. And Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that I neither command it nor forbid it.
Hadith 13994
١٣٩٩٤ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا محمد بن فضيل عن مغيرة عن إبراهيم قال: يدهن الرجل بكل شيء عند الإحرام (إلا الموتب والموتب الساهرية والملاب) (١).
Ibrahim says that at the time of putting on Ihram, every kind of perfume can be applied except women's perfume and saffron.
Hadith 13995
١٣٩٩٥ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا وكيع قال: حدثنا الأعمش عن أبي الضحى عن مسروق عن عائشة قالت: كأني أنظر إلى وبيص الطيب في مفارق رسول اللَّه ﷺ وهو يلبي (١).
Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that it is as if I am seeing the shine of fragrance in the middle of the head of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was reciting the Talbiyah.
Hadith 13996
١٣٩٩٦ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا (وكيع قال: حدثنا) (١) هشام بن عروة عن أبيه عن عائشة قالت: كنت أطيب رسول اللَّه ﷺ عند إحرامه بأطيب ما أجد (٢).
Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that I used to apply the best fragrance from among the perfumes I had to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of Ihram.
Hadith 13997
١٣٩٩٧ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا محمد بن (بشر) (١) قال: حدثنا محمد بن عمرو عن أبيه عن علقمة عن عائشة قالت: طيبت رسول اللَّه ﷺ لِحْرمه حين أحرم ولحله حين أحل قبل أن يطوف بالبيت (٢).
Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that I used to apply perfume to the Ihram of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) before he entered into Ihram, and I would also apply perfume before he ended the Ihram, before performing the Tawaf of the House of Allah.
Hadith 13998
١٣٩٩٨ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا أبو أسامة ووكيع عن هشام بن عروة عن أبيه عن ابن الزبير أنه كان يتطيب بالغالية الجيدة عند إحرامه (١).
When Ibn Zubair would intend to enter the state of Ihram, he would apply ghaliyah perfume.
