Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was asked about fasting on the day of Arafah. He replied: I performed Hajj with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he did not fast on that day. I performed Hajj with Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq, and he also did not fast on that day. I performed Hajj with Hazrat Umar, and he too did not fast on that day. I performed Hajj with Hazrat Uthman, and he also did not fast on that day. And I myself do not fast on that day. As for the rest, I neither command you to do so nor forbid you from it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Fadl bin Abbas that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Arafah asked for milk from the litter of Umm Fadl and then drank it, although he was in Arafah.

It is narrated from Hazrat Fadl bin Abbas that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drank water or milk on the day of Arafah.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) did not fast on the day of standing at Arafah. Hazrat Umm Fadl sent milk to him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) drank from it.

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair narrates that I was present in the service of Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) on the day of Arafah. He was eating a pomegranate and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not fast on the day of Arafah, and Hazrat Umm Fadl gave him milk to drink, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) drank from it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: May Allah's curse be upon so-and-so; he intended to perform Hajj but erased its adornment. And he said: The adornment of Hajj is reciting the Talbiyah.

Hazrat Ikrimah says that I visited Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) at his house and asked him about fasting on the day of Arafah in Arafat. Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade fasting on the day of Arafah in Arafat.

It is narrated from Hazrat Uqbah bin Aamir that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The day of standing at Arafah, the day of sacrifice, and the days of Mina are days of eating and drinking.

Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib was asked about fasting on the day of Wuquf at Arafah. He replied: Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) did not use to fast.

It was mentioned before Hazrat Tawus that fasting on the day of Arafah is equal to the fasts of two years. He said with astonishment: Then where were Hazrat Abu Bakr and Umar regarding this? (Meaning, why did they not fast on this day?)

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair did not fast on the day of Arafah and said, "I want to gain strength for supplication."

Hazrat Ubaid bin Umair narrates that on the day of Wuquf-e-Arafah, I saw Hazrat Umar drinking (water or milk).

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) and Hazrat Ibn Zubair were seen on the afternoon of the stay at Arafah taking a vessel one after the other and drinking from it.

Hasan disliked fasting on the Day of Arafah for a person present in Makkah.

Hazrat Ubaid bin Umair instructed his son not to fast on the day of Arafah.

Hazrat Amarah bin Zadhan says that I asked Hazrat Salim about fasting on the day of Arafah. He replied: O son! Neither Hazrat Umar nor anyone from the family of Umar used to fast on that day.

Hazrat Masruq narrates that Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) used to fast on the day of Arafah.

Hazrat Qasim used to fast on the day of Arafah.
