Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that a man came to the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "My mother has passed away suddenly, and indeed, if she could speak, she would have given charity. If I give charity on her behalf now, will she receive the reward?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Yes."

Hazrat Amr bin Shu'aib narrates from his father and grandfather that they asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! As bin Wa'il had ordered in the time of ignorance that a hundred camels be slaughtered, and Hisham bin Al-As had slaughtered fifty camels as his share. Should I slaughter on his behalf? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If your father had affirmed the oneness of Allah, then he will receive reward from your fasting, giving charity, and freeing slaves on his behalf.

Hazrat Saeed bin Abu Saeed says that if even a small amount of meat is given in charity on behalf of the deceased, then indeed the reward reaches him.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Hazrat Sa’d bin Ubadah asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about his mother’s vow, that she passed away before fulfilling her vow. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Fulfill it on her behalf.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surely, a person's rank (in Paradise) is elevated, and he asks, "How did this happen?" It is said to him, "This is because of the seeking of forgiveness by your son for you after you."

Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib says that surely a man's rank (in Paradise) is elevated because of the supplication of his son which he makes for him after his death.

It is narrated from Hazrat Sufyan and Hazrat Zaid bin Aslam that a man came to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! My father has passed away, should I free a slave on his behalf? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Yes.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hajjaj bin Dinar that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surely, the virtue after virtue is that you perform prayer along with your own prayer on behalf of your parents, and fast on their behalf along with your own fast, and give charity on their behalf along with your own charity.

Hazrat Ata says that four deeds (actions) can be performed on behalf of the deceased: freeing a slave, giving charity, performing Hajj, and performing Umrah.

Hazrat Ata says that after a person's death, the reward for freeing a slave, performing Hajj, and giving charity on his behalf reaches him.

Hazrat Buraidah narrates from his father that I was sitting in the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a woman came and said: My mother had two months of fasts due; is it sufficient if I fast on her behalf? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes. She then said: My mother never performed Hajj; is it sufficient (permissible) if I perform Hajj on her behalf? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes.

Hazrat Abu Ja'far narrates that after the demise of Hazrat Ali, Hazrat Hasan and Husayn used to free slaves on his behalf.
