Hadith 12361
١٢٣٦١ - حدثنا هشيم بن بشير حدثنا عبد العزيز بن صهيب (البناني) (١) عن (أنس) (٢) قال: مرت جنازة برسول اللَّه ﷺ فأثني عليها (بخير) (٣) حتى (تتابعت) (٤) (الألسن) (٥) (فقال) (٦) رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "وجبت". قال: ومرت (به) (٧) جنازة فأثني ⦗١٩٤⦘ (عليها) (٨) (بشر) (٩) حتى تتابعت الألسن فقال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "وجبت". فقال عمر ابن الخطاب: يا رسول اللَّه قلت في الجنازة الأولى حيث أثني عليها خيرًا: "وجبت"، وقلت في الثانية كذلك، فقال: " [(هذا) (١٠) أثنيتم عليه خيرًا فوجبت له الجنة، وهذا أثنيتم عليه شرا فوجبت له النار] (١١) إنكم شهود اللَّه في الأرض"، مرتين (أو) (١٢) (ثلاثًا) (١٣) (١٤).
Hasan narrates that a funeral passed by the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and someone praised the deceased. Seeing this, many other tongues also praised him. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has become obligatory for him." (Then once again) a funeral passed by the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and someone spoke ill of the deceased. Seeing this, many other tongues also spoke ill of him. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has become obligatory for him." Hazrat Umar bin Khattab submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! When the first funeral passed and he was praised, you said, 'It has become obligatory,' and for the second one as well you said, 'It has become obligatory.' (What has become obligatory?)" The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, you are Allah's witnesses on earth." He repeated this blessed sentence two or three times.
Hadith 12362
١٢٣٦٢ - حدثنا زيد بن الحباب عن موسى (بن) (١) عبيدة عن (إياس) (٢) بن (سلمة) (٣) عن أبيه قال: مر على النبي ﷺ بجنازة رجل من الأنصار فأثني عليها (خيرًا) (٤) فقال: "وجبت" [(ثم مر) (٥) عليه بجنازة (أخرى) (٦) (فأثني) (٧) عليها ⦗١٩٥⦘ دون ذلك فقال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "وجبت] (٨) "، فقالوا: يا رسول اللَّه ﷺ، وما وجبت؟ قال: "الملائكة شهود اللَّه في السماء وأنتم شهود اللَّه في الأرض" (٩).
Hazrat Iyas bin Salamah narrates from his father that a funeral of a person from among the Ansar passed by the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and his virtues were mentioned. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It has become obligatory." Then another funeral passed by, and his faults were mentioned. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "It has become obligatory." The companions asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What has become obligatory?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "The angels are Allah's witnesses in the heavens, and you are Allah's witnesses on the earth."
Hadith 12363
١٢٣٦٣ - حدثنا علي بن مسهر عن محمد بن عمرو عن (أبي) (١) سلمة عن أبي هريرة قال: مروا على النبي ﷺ بجنازة فأثني عليها (بخير) (٢) في مناقب الخير فقال: "وجبت"، ثم مروا بأخرى فأثني عليها (بشر) (٣) في مناقب الشر فقال: "وجبت، إنكم (شهداء) (٤) اللَّه في الأرض" (٥).
Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that people passed by the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with a funeral, and its goodness was mentioned. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has become obligatory." Then another funeral passed by, and among its bad qualities, its evil was mentioned. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has become obligatory." Surely, you people are Allah's witnesses on earth.
Hadith 12364
١٢٣٦٤ - حدثنا عفان حدثنا داود بن أبي الفرات عن عبد اللَّه بن (١) بريدة عن أبي الأسود (الديلي) (٢) قال: قدمت المدينة وقد وقع بها مرض فجلست إلى عمر بن ⦗١٩٦⦘ الخطاب، فمرت بهم جنازة فأثني (على صاحبها) (٣) (خير) (٤) فقال عمر: وجبت، ثم (مر) (٥) بأخرى فأثني عليها (بشر) (٦) فقال عمر: وجبت. فقال أبو الأسود: فقلت: وما وجبت يا أمير المؤمنين؟ قال: قلت كما قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "أيما مسلم (يشهد) (٧) له أربعة بخير أدخله اللَّه الجنة"، فقلنا وثلاثة قال: "وثلاثة"، فقلنا: وأثنان قال: "وأثنان"، ثم (لم نسأله) (٨) عن الواحد (٩).
Hazrat Abu Al-Aswad Al-Daili narrates that I came to Madinah when there was an epidemic spreading. I sat with Hazrat Umar bin Khattab, and a funeral passed by him, about whom good was spoken. Hazrat Umar said: "It has become obligatory for him." Then another funeral passed by, about whom evil was spoken, so Hazrat Umar said: "It has become obligatory for him." Hazrat Abu Al-Aswad asked, "O Commander of the Faithful! What has become obligatory?" Hazrat Umar replied, "I have said just as the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'If four people testify to the goodness of a Muslim, Allah will admit him to Paradise.' We asked, 'If three?' He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Even for three.' We asked, 'If two?' He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Even for two, He will admit him to Paradise.' After that, we did not ask about one."
Hadith 12365
١٢٣٦٥ - حدثنا جرير عن عبد العزيز (بن رفيع) (١) عن خيثمة قال: قال عبد اللَّه: انظروا الناس عند مضاجعهم فإذا رأيتم العبد يموت على خير ما ترونه فارجوا له الخير، وإن رأيتموه يموت على شر (ما) (٢) ترونه فخافوا عليه (٣).
Hazrat Abdullah says that observe people near their beds; if you see goodness in a dying person, then hope for good for him, and if you see evil in the dying person, then fear for him.
Hadith 12366
١٢٣٦٦ - حدثنا محمد بن (بشر) (١) (قال) (٢): حدثنا (مسعر) (٣) قال: ⦗١٩٧⦘ حدثني إبراهيم بن عامر (بن مسعود) (٤) عن عامر بن سعد عن أبي هريرة قال: توفي رجل فذكر عند النبي ﷺ[فأثني عليه (خير) (٥) فقال] (٦): "وجبت"، وتوفي آخر فذكر منه (شر) (٧) فقال النبي ﷺ: "وجبت"، فقال بعض القوم: عجب من (قول) (٨) رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "وجبت"، فقال النبي ﷺ: " (بعض شهداء على بعض) (٩) " (١٠).
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man passed away and his good qualities were mentioned in the presence of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Paradise has become obligatory for him. Another man passed away and his bad qualities were mentioned in the presence of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Hell will become obligatory for him. Some people said, "O Messenger of Allah! We are amazed at your statement that it has become obligatory." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Some people are witnesses over others.
