Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Qatadah says that I attended the funeral of a person from this group (the non-Arabs living in Basra). They crowded while carrying the bier, so Hazrat Abu al-Sawar al-Adawi said: Look at these people—are they better or the companions of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? If any companion among the noble companions saw it possible to carry the bier, he would do so; otherwise, he would step aside and would not cause any inconvenience to anyone.

Ismail al-Hajdari narrates: We went out for a funeral, and Hasan was also present. He saw that people were crowding around the bier. Hasan said: What is the matter with these people? I think that when Satan saw the sense of goodness and reward among the people, he joined them and cast a whisper into their hearts so that they would crowd while carrying the bier, causing harm to others and thus nullifying their reward.
