Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer at the grave after the deceased had been buried.

Hazrat Kharijah bin Zaid narrates from his uncle Hazrat Yazid bin Thabit that we once went out with the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When we reached Jannat al-Baqi', there was a new grave there. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) inquired about it. The companions replied that it was the grave of a certain woman. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recognized her and came to her grave. We formed rows behind him and he recited four takbirs over her (performed the funeral prayer).

Hazrat Humaid bin Hilal narrates that Hazrat Al-Bara bin Ma’rur had passed away before the arrival of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah. When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah, he offered their funeral prayer.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer for the deceased after burying him.

Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib narrates that Hazrat Umm Sa’d bin Ubadah passed away while the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was not present. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, they came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I wish that you would perform the funeral prayer for Umm Sa’d." So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to her grave and performed the funeral prayer.

Hazrat Qasim narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Jannat al-Baqi and saw a new grave there. He inquired, "Whose grave is this?" It was submitted that it belonged to a certain woman who was a slave of Banu Ghanm and used to clean the mosque. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered her funeral prayer.

Hazrat Sha’bi narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him, may Allah honor his face) had performed the funeral prayer of Hazrat Ibn Haneef and buried him. Meanwhile, Qarzah bin Ka’b arrived with some companions. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him, may Allah honor his face) instructed them that they and their companions should go to his grave and perform the funeral prayer. Accordingly, they did so.

Hazrat Hakam states that Hazrat Salman bin Rabee’ah arrived at a time when Hazrat Abdullah had already performed the funeral prayer. Hazrat Abdullah said to him: Step forward and perform the funeral prayer for your brother along with your companions.

Hazrat Yahya bin Abi Saeed narrates that Hazrat Anas performed the funeral prayer for him after the funeral prayer had already been performed.

Hazrat Ibn Abi Mulaika narrates that Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakr passed away at the place where he was, so his companions lifted his funeral and, after traveling six miles, brought him to Makkah and buried him. Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was not present. When she arrived, she said, "Show me the grave." When the grave was shown to her, she performed his funeral prayer.

Hazrat Nafi' narrates that when Hazrat Asim bin Umar passed away, Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) was not present. Later, when he arrived—Ayub, the narrator, says that I think he came after three days—he said, "Show me my brother's grave." He was shown the grave, and he offered prayer over it.

Hazrat Ibn Aun narrates that I was with Hazrat Ibn Sirin and we were waiting for the funeral, but it had already been performed and the burial was completed before us. Hazrat Ibn Sirin said, "Come, let us do what they have done," and then he said four takbirs at the grave.

Hazrat Khaythamah narrates that Hazrat Abu Musa performed the funeral prayer for Hazrat Harith bin Qais after his funeral prayer had already been performed. He found him in the wilderness and, after the funeral prayer had been performed, he performed the funeral prayer again. Yahya, the narrator, says that once Hazrat Sharik said: Hazrat Abu Musa led the prayer and sought forgiveness for him.

Hazrat Qatadah narrates that when Hazrat Basheer bin Ka'b arrived at the funeral, the funeral prayer had already been performed, so he performed the funeral prayer again.

Hazrat Abu Umamah bin Sahl narrates from his father that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to visit the sick among the poor people of Madinah and would offer their funeral prayer when they passed away. He narrates that a woman from among the people of 'Awali passed away and was buried. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to her grave, offered her funeral prayer, and recited four takbirs.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Aamir bin Rabee’ah narrates from his father that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a new grave and asked, “Whose grave is this?” The companions replied, “It is the grave of such-and-such woman.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Why was I not informed?” He then formed rows at her grave and offered prayer.
