Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Amir bin Rabi’ah narrates that I have heard from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: When you see a funeral passing by, stand up until it leaves you behind (passes ahead of you) or it is placed down.

It is narrated from Hazrat Amir bin Rabi'ah in similar words.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that a funeral passed by the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and said to his companions: "Stand up, indeed there is fear and dread of death."

Hazrat Kharijah bin Zaid narrates from his uncle Hazrat Yazid bin Thabit that he was sitting with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a funeral procession passed by. When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw it, he stood up, and his companions also stood up, and they remained standing until the funeral had passed. I do not think that he stood up due to any discomfort or tightness of space, and I think it was the funeral of a Jewish man or woman. We did not ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the reason for this standing.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Musa that when a funeral procession would pass by the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he would stand up until it had passed.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you see a funeral procession, stand up.

Hazrat Sha'bi narrates that when a funeral procession passed by Hazrat Abu Sa'id, he stood up. Marwan said, "Please sit down." He replied, "I myself saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stand up upon seeing a funeral procession." Upon hearing this, Marwan also stood up.

Hazrat Ibn Abi Laila narrates that people said to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that Hazrat Abu Musa gives this ruling. (What is your opinion?) He replied: Surely, the angels are with him; you should stand up for them.

Ibrahim says that I do not know anyone except Hazrat Amr bin Maymoon who would stand up when a funeral passed by (only Hazrat Amr used to stand up).

Hazrat Abu Bishr narrates that Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib and Hazrat Salim bin Abdullah were present when a funeral procession passed by them. Hazrat Salim stood up, but Hazrat Saeed did not stand.

Hazrat Waleed bin Al-Muhajir narrates that I saw Hazrat Sha'bi; when a funeral procession passed by him, he stood up.

Hazrat Ja'far narrates from his father that Hazrat Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was seated when a funeral procession passed by him. When the funeral passed by them, the people stood up. Hazrat Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Once, a Jewish funeral passed by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was seated in its path. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked that the Jewish funeral should pass above his head, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up.

Hazrat Ibn Abi Laila narrates that Hazrat Qais bin Sa'd and Hazrat Sahl bin Hunaif were at Qadisiyyah when a funeral procession passed by them, so both of them stood up. It was said to them, "This is one of the people of the land (he is not a Muslim)." They replied, "Once a funeral procession passed by the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he stood up. It was said to him, 'This is a Jew.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Is he not a human being?'"
