Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abu Buraidah narrates from his father that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I had previously forbidden you from visiting graves, but now you may visit them.

Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade visiting graves, then (later) said: Visit the graves and do not engage in vain talk.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him, may Allah honor his face) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) had forbidden visiting graves, then (later) he said: Indeed, I had forbidden you from visiting graves, now you may visit them, for it refreshes the remembrance of the Hereafter.

Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) visited the grave of his respected mother, and he wept, and those around him also began to weep. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I sought permission from my Lord to pray for her forgiveness, but I was not granted permission. And I sought permission from my Lord to visit graves, and I was granted permission. So you should visit graves, for this will remind you of death. Hazrat Sulaiman bin Buraidah narrates from his father that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Makkah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to an old grave and sat beside it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) became as if addressing someone, and people sat around him. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, he was weeping. Hazrat Umar met him, and Hazrat Umar was the boldest among the people in addressing him. Hazrat Umar said: O Messenger of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you, what has made you weep? He (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: This is the grave of my noble mother. I asked my Lord for permission to visit it, and I was granted permission. I asked for permission to seek forgiveness for her, but I was not granted it. I remembered her, and my heart was moved with compassion, so I wept. The narrator says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was never seen weeping more than he did on that day.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, I had previously forbidden you from visiting graves, but now I have been permitted to visit my mother's grave. So you too should visit graves, for this will remind you of death and the Hereafter.

Hazrat Nafi' narrates that when Hazrat Asim bin Umar passed away, Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) was not present. When he arrived, he said: "Show me his grave," then he stood by it for a while and made supplication.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abi Mulaika narrates that Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakr passed away at a place called Habshi. Hazrat Ibn Jurayj states that Habshi is a place twelve miles from Makkah. He was buried in Makkah. When Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) came, she visited his grave and recited these verses: "We were companions for a long time, firmly bound, so much so that it was thought we would never be separated. But when we were separated, it felt as if, despite that long companionship, I and the Master had not spent even a single night together." Then she said: "By Allah! If I had been present at that time, I would have had him buried where he passed away, and if I had been present at his funeral, I would not have visited his grave."

Hazrat Ibn Buraidah narrates from his father that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was once sitting in a gathering and was extremely sad. One of the people said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What is the reason that you appear to be sad?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "Yes, I was remembering my mother." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I had forbidden you from eating the meat of sacrifice for more than three days, so (now) you may eat it yourselves, feed others, and store as much as you wish. And I had forbidden you from visiting graves, so whoever wishes to visit his mother's grave may do so. And I had forbidden you from using gourd vessels, green-colored vessels, vessels dyed with green oil, and bowl-shaped hollowed-out wood in which date wine is made; so avoid every intoxicating thing and drink whatever else you wish (that does not intoxicate)."
