Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Jarir in a marfu’ form that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The lahd (niche grave) is for us, and the shaqq (simple grave) is for others.

Hazrat Hafs narrates from his father that a lahd (side niche grave) was made for the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.

Hazrat Nafi' states that for the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiq, and Hazrat Umar, a lahd (niche) grave was dug, then you took pride in it.

Ibrahim narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was buried in a lahd (niche in the grave).

Hazrat Hisham bin Urwah narrates from the jurists of the people of Madinah that there were two men in Madinah who used to dig graves; one of them would make a grave with a trench (shaqq) and the other would make a niche (lahd). When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) departed from this world, the companions said, "Go and call whichever of them you find, and tell him to come and do his work." Then the man who used to dig the niche (lahd) came, and the companions instructed him to dig a niche for the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Qasim narrates from his father that when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, all the companions gathered together. There was one person who made graves with a niche (lahd) and another who made graves with a trench (shaqq). The companions prayed, "O Allah! Choose one of them (for us)." So the person who used to dig graves with a niche (lahd) came and dug a niche grave for the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Hazrat Abu Ja'far, Hazrat Salim, and Hazrat Qasim state that the blessed graves of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Abu Bakr Siddiq, and Hazrat Umar are inclined towards the Qibla (their faces are towards the Qibla), and (unbaked) bricks have been installed in them, and they have been dug in the form of a lahd (side niche).

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that a side-by-side grave was made for the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Abu Bakr Siddiq, and Hazrat Umar.

Ibrahim narrates that a side niche grave was prepared for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.

Hazrat Mughira narrates that Ibrahim disliked the grave with a split (shaqq) and said that a side (lahaad) grave should be made.

Hazrat Saeed narrates that a side niche grave was made for the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).

Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had instructed that a side niche grave be made for him.

Hazrat Mughirah bin Shu'bah narrates that we made a grave with a niche (lahd) for the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Hazrat Al-Bara says that we were with the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) at a funeral, then we came to its grave, and when we saw, a niche had been dug for it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (on the occasion of the Battle of Uhud): "See, among them, the one who had memorized more of the Holy Qur'an, place him foremost in the grave."

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Ka'b bin Malik narrates from his father that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered two or three persons in a single grave: (they were buried together).
