Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Umamah bin Sahl narrates from his father that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer at the grave of a woman and said four takbirs.

It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the funeral prayer of Ashamah Najashi, and in it he performed four takbirs.

It is narrated from Hazrat Saeed that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went towards Baqi and led the funeral prayer for Najashi and recited four takbirs.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Najashi has passed away. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions went towards Baqi. We formed rows behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was in front of us. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said four takbirs.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abzi narrates that when Hazrat Zainab bint Jahsh passed away, Hazrat Umar recited four takbirs in the funeral prayer. Then he asked the noble wives who should descend her into the grave. They replied: The one who used to come to her during her lifetime (the one from whom she did not observe veiling).

Hazrat Abdu Khair narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away in such a state that he used to recite four takbirs in the funeral prayer.

Hazrat Umair bin Saeed narrates that I offered the funeral prayer of Hazrat Yazid bin Al-Mukaffaf behind Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He recited four takbirs in the funeral prayer.

It is narrated in a similar manner from Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).

Ibrahim narrates that Abdullah was asked about the number of takbirs in the funeral prayer. He replied that every kind of practice has been done in the funeral prayer, but I found the people (the companions) united upon four takbirs.

Hazrat Abdullah says that there are four takbirs in the funeral prayer, including the takbir of commencement.

Hazrat Muhajir Abi Al-Hasan narrates that I offered the funeral prayer behind Hazrat Bara, and he said four takbirs in it.

A person asked Hazrat Uqbah bin Aamir, "How many takbeers are there in the funeral prayer?" He replied, "Four." I asked, "Is it the same during the day and night?" He replied, "The day and night are the same."

Hazrat Zaid bin Talha narrates that I went to Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), and he recited four Takbirs over the funeral.

Hazrat Thabit Ubaid narrates that Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit used to recite four Takbirs in the funeral prayer, and Hazrat Abu Hurairah also used to recite four Takbirs.

Hazrat Abu Al-Anbas narrates from his father that he offered the funeral prayer behind Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he (Abu Hurairah) said four Takbirs over it.

It is narrated from the servant of Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) led the funeral prayer of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and recited four takbirs in it.

Hazrat Nafi' narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) would not say more than four takbirs in the funeral prayer.

A narration similar to this is also reported from Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Ma’qil narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah honor his face) during his caliphate recited four takbirs in every funeral prayer, except for Hazrat Sahl bin Hunaif, upon whom he recited six takbirs. Then, turning towards the people, he said: (I recited six takbirs) because he was a participant of Badr.

Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud says that we used to say five or six takbeers in the funeral prayer, then we all agreed upon four. (Consensus was reached on four.)

Ibn Aun narrates that Muhammad used to say four takbirs in the funeral prayer.

Hazrat Imran bin Abu Ata narrates that I was present at the death of Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), so Hazrat Ibn al-Hanafiyyah led his funeral prayer and recited four takbirs.

Hazrat Umar bin Hudeir narrates that Hazrat Abu Majliz used to recite four Takbirs in the funeral prayer.

Hazrat Al-Hajri narrates that I offered the funeral prayer behind Hazrat Abdullah bin Abi Awfa. He recited four takbirs in it, then stood for a short while, until we thought that he would say the fifth takbir. Then he said salam and said: Did you think that I would say the fifth takbir? I stood in the same manner as I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stand.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Jamee’ states that I saw Ibrahim reciting four takbirs in the funeral prayer.

Hazrat Umar bin Abi Zaidah says that I offered the funeral prayer behind Hazrat Qas bin Abi Hazim; he said four takbirs in it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Amr bin Murrah that Hazrat Umar said: All tasks have been completed, come, let us reach consensus on such a matter that those after us can use as evidence. Then everyone recited four takbirs over the funeral.

Hazrat Amr bin Muhajir narrates that I offered the funeral prayer behind Hazrat Wasila; he pronounced four takbirs.

Hazrat Abu Khasib narrates that Hazrat Suwaid recited four takbirs in the funeral prayer.

Hazrat Abu Wa'il narrates that Hazrat Umar gathered the companions and consulted them regarding the number of takbirs in the funeral prayer. Some of them said that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite five takbirs, some said he used to recite seven takbirs, and some said he used to recite four takbirs. The narrator says that then all of them agreed upon four takbirs.

Ibrahim states that the Companions differed regarding the number of takbirs in the funeral prayer, then they all agreed upon four takbirs.
