Performing the Funeral Prayer at Sunrise or Sunset
Hadith 11658
١١٦٥٨ - حدثنا حاتم بن إسماعيل عن (أنيس) (١) (بن) (٢) أبي يحيى عن أبيه أن ⦗٨⦘ جنازة وضعت فقام ابن عمر قائمًا فقال: أين ولي هذه الجنازة؟ ليصلي عليها قبل أن يطلع قرن الشمس (٣).
Hazrat Anis bin Abi Yahya narrates from his father that when a funeral was placed, Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) stood up saying, "Where is the guardian of this deceased so that we may perform the funeral prayer before sunrise?"
Hadith 11659
١١٦٥٩ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد عن عنبسة (الوزان) (١) قال: حدثنا (أبو) (٢) لبابة قال: صليت مع أبي هريرة على جنازة والشمس على أطراف الجدر (٣).
Hazrat Abu Lubabah narrates that I offered the funeral prayer with Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) at a time when the sunlight was on the sides of the walls.
Hadith 11660
١١٦٦٠ - حدثنا أبو داود الطيالسي عن شعبة عن أبي حصين أن عبيدة: أوصى أن يصلي عليه الأسود قال: فجاؤوا به قبل أن تغرب الشمس قال: فصلى عليه قبل غروب الشمس.
Hazrat Abu Husain narrates that Hazrat Ubaidah had made a will that his funeral prayer should be led by Hazrat Aswad. He was called before sunset, so he led the funeral prayer before the sun had set.
Hadith 11661
١١٦٦١ - حدثنا وكيع عن (جعفر) (١) بن برقان عن ميمون قال: كان ابن عمر يكره الصلاة على الجنازة (إذا) (٢) (طلعت) (٣) الشمس و (حين) (٤) تغيب (٥).
Hazrat Maymun states that Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) disliked performing the funeral prayer at the time of sunrise and sunset.
Hadith 11662
١١٦٦٢ - حدثنا يزيد بن هارون عن حبيب عن عمرو قال: سئل جابر بن زيد هل تدفن (الجنازة) (١) عند طلوع الشمس أو عند غروبها أو غروب بعضها؟ قال: لا.
Hazrat Amr narrates that Hazrat Jabir was asked whether a funeral should be buried at sunrise, sunset, or when part of the sun has set? He replied, "No."
Hadith 11663
١١٦٦٣ - حدثنا معن عن ابن أبي ذئب عن الزهري قال يكره الصلاة على الجنازة بعد العصر وبعد الفجر.
Imam Zuhri states that it is disliked to perform the funeral prayer after Asr and after Fajr.
Hadith 11664
١١٦٦٤ - حدثنا محمد بن أبي عدي عن ابن عون قال: كان محمد يحب أن يصلي على الجنازة (ثم يصلي) (١) العصر (وكان يكره أن يصلى) (٢) على الجنازة بعد العصر.
Muhammad preferred that the funeral prayer be performed first and then the Asr prayer; he disliked that the Asr prayer be performed first and then the funeral prayer.
Hadith 11665
١١٦٦٥ - (حدثنا غندر عن عثمان بن غياث قال: سألت الحسن عن الصلاة على الجنازة بعد العصر) (١)؛ (فقال) (٢): نعم؛ إذا كانت (بيضاء نقية) (٣)، فإذا أزفت للإياب فلا (يصلَّى) (٤) عليها حتى تغرب الشمس.
Hazrat Usman bin Ghiyath narrates that Hasan was asked about performing the funeral prayer after Asr. He replied, "Yes, when there is pure whiteness (of the sun), then perform it. And when the sun is near to setting, do not perform it until it has set."
Hadith 11666
١١٦٦٦ - حدثنا أبو الأحوص عن أبي إسحاق عن أبي بكر يعني ابن حفص قال: كان عبد اللَّه بن عمر إذا كانت الجنازة صلى العصر ثم قال: عجلوا بها قبل أن تطفل الشمس (١).
It is narrated from Ibn Hafs that Abdullah bin Umar, when a funeral was present, would perform the Asr prayer and say: "Hurry before the sun sets."
