Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Hisham narrates from his father that Hazrat Asma bint Umais was the first woman who invented (introduced) the coffin (bier).

Hazrat Tariq bin Shihab narrates that Hazrat Umm Ayman ordered a coffin (bier) for women.

Hazrat Imran bin Hadeer narrates that we passed by Abu Majliz carrying a large coffin (charpoy), so he said: The Jews and Christians raised it, therefore you people should oppose them.

Ibrahim says that when carrying the bier of a woman, men should place supports under the bier to create a gap between themselves and the bier. There is no need to do this for a man's bier; rather, he should be placed in the middle of the bier.
