Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Ibrahim that the wife of Abdullah came to the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "I have a nephew under my care. Can I give the zakat of my jewelry to him?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes."

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) says that there is no harm in giving zakat to those relatives who are not your dependents.

It is narrated from Alqamah that Abdullah's wife asked Abdullah, "My brother's orphaned boy is in my care; can I give him zakat?" He replied, "Yes."

Hazrat Ibrahim bin Abu Hafsah says that I asked Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair about (giving zakat to) a maternal aunt, whether zakat can be given to her? Hazrat Saeed replied: As long as the door is not closed upon you.

Ibrahim, Hazrat Hisham, and Hasan—all these personalities permit giving zakat to relatives.

Hazrat Abdul Malik says that I asked Hazrat Ata: Can a person give zakat to his relatives? He replied: Yes, as long as they are not among your household members.

Hazrat Dahhak says that if your relatives are poor, then they are more deserving of your zakat than others.

Hazrat Zubair narrates that I asked Ibrahim about giving zakat to a sister, whether zakat can be given to her? He replied, yes.

Hasan was asked: Can a person give zakat to his relatives? He replied: Yes, as long as they are not among your household.

It is narrated from Hazrat Hanzala that a person asked Hazrat Tawus, "Some poor people from among my family live with me (can I give them zakat?)" He replied, "Give it to them on behalf of yourself and your family."

The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Giving charity (zakat) to one who is not a close relative is only charity (there is only the reward of giving charity), and giving to a close relative brings two rewards: the reward of charity and the reward of maintaining family ties.

Hazrat Sufyan says that those whose maintenance is obligatory upon you should not be given.

Hazrat Mujahid says: Your charity (Zakat) will not be accepted (when you give it to outsiders) while your relatives are in need.
