Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Zaid bin Aslam narrates from his father that Hazrat Umar gave a horse in charity in the way of Allah and made a Mujahid ride it, or he gave some clothes in charity in the way of Allah. Later, he saw them in the market and intended to buy them back himself, and went to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to ask about this. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Leave it, so that on the Day of Resurrection you may be given its (full) reward.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Aamir narrates that a person gave a horse in charity in the way of Allah. Later, when he saw that horse or its foal being sold in the market and intended to buy it, Hazrat Zubair bin Al-Awwam forbade him from doing so.

Hazrat Abu Alia reports that Hazrat Abu Usama gave a foal as charity in the way of Allah. Later, he saw the same animal being sold (in the market). He says, I recognized it and asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), "I have recognized it (should I buy it?)" The Prophet forbade me from doing so.

Hazrat Umar Farooq said that if the zakat (charity) you have given reaches someone else after leaving the person you gave it to, then there is no harm in buying it.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Hazrat Umar gave a horse in charity in the way of Allah and made a Mujahid ride it. Later, he saw it in the market and intended to buy it back himself. He went to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and inquired about it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Leave it, so that you may be given its (full) reward on the Day of Judgment.

A narration similar to that of Abu Usama is also reported from Hazrat Zaid bin Haritha.

A person asked Hazrat Imran bin Husain that if, after giving charity (zakat), a portion of it returns to a person, what is the ruling regarding it? He replied that the reward will be reduced in proportion to the amount that has returned to him.
