Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Mu'tamir narrates from his father that Hazrat Tawus was of the opinion that the one who collects zakat should sit in one place. Whatever (zakat) is given to him, he should accept it, and whoever does not give it to him, he should remain silent. (He should not argue with anyone.)

Hazrat Muhammad bin Maslamah Ansari, who was among the companions of Badr. In the time of Hazrat Umar, he used to go to the people of the tribe of Ashja‘ to collect the zakat of animals. He would sit at one place, and whoever brought a goat to him to fulfill his obligation of zakat, he would collect it from him.

Hazrat Abu Haritha narrates that Hazrat Umar Farooq sent us to collect Zakat. So, whatever was brought to us in which we had a right, we would take that from him.

Hazrat Tawus says that the collector of zakat should go to the people at their water place (or any such place where everyone can gather) and should not make them take any kind of oath or covenant (i.e., should not compel them to do anything).

Muhammad Irshad narrates that the collector of zakat used to come. So if he saw camels and goats, he would start collecting their zakat and he would not wait for anyone.
