Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Ubadah bin Samit that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the moon, he would recite this supplication: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. The strength to avoid sin and the power to do good comes only from Allah. O Allah! I ask You for the goodness of this month, and I seek refuge with You from the evil of fate and from the calamity of the Day of Resurrection.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Harmalah narrates that I came out of the mosque with Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib. We said, "O Abu Muhammad! Look, the moon!" When he saw the moon, he said: "I believe in the Lord who created you, shaped you, and made your form balanced." Then he turned to me and said that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say these words upon seeing the moon.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when any of you sees the moon, he should not raise his head; it is sufficient for you to say: "My Lord and your Lord is Allah."

Ibrahim says that when you see the moon, say: "My Lord and your Lord is Allah."

Hazrat Abu Ishaq narrates that when Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the moon, he used to say these words: O Allah! Grant us help, goodness, blessing, victory, and light. We seek Your refuge from the evil of this moon and from the evil of what comes after it.

Hazrat Abu Mas'ud Badri says that for me to fall face down from this palace is more preferable than holding the belief of those people who say that when any of you sees the moon, he should think that he is seeing his Lord.

Hazrat Husain bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I asked Hazrat Hisham bin Hassan which supplication Hazrat Hasan used to recite upon sighting the moon. He replied that he used to say: O Allah! Make this month a source of blessing, light, reward, and forgiveness. O Allah! You distribute goodness among Your servants. So distribute goodness among us as You distribute among Your righteous servants.

Hazrat Ibn Jurayj states that Hazrat Ata saw a man who, when he saw the moon in a deserted place, said these words: O Allah! Cause this moon to rise upon us with peace and faith, safety and well-being, guidance and forgiveness, and with such ability that You are pleased. Grant protection from those deeds which cause Your displeasure. My Lord and your Lord is Allah. Hazrat Ata says that he kept repeating these words until I memorized them. I have not seen anyone else say these words.

Ibrahim liked it very much when he saw a man looking at the moon and saying these words: My Lord and your Lord is Allah.

Hazrat Mujahid considered it undesirable to raise one's voice or gesture upon sighting the moon.

It is narrated from Hazrat Qatadah that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the moon, he recited these words three times: "This is a moon of goodness and guidance, this is a moon of goodness and guidance, I believe in the Lord who created you." Then he said, "All praise is due to Allah who has brought this month."

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) considered it disliked to stand facing the moon; he would stand with his side towards the moon and would say: All praise is for Allah who took away this month and brought this month.
