Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ata says that if a person observing i'tikaf stipulates that he will perform i'tikaf during the day and go to his family at night, then this is not i'tikaf.

Hazrat Qatadah did not consider it objectionable for a person observing i'tikaf to stipulate the condition of having dinner and suhoor with his family.

Hasan says that if the person observing i'tikaf wishes, he may eat dinner with his family, but he should not go to the shaded area of his house; rather, his food should be brought to the courtyard of the house.

Hazrat Ya'la (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Umayyah would say to his companion, "Let us go to the mosque," and then he would observe i'tikaf there for a short while.
