Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abu Uthman narrates that once two villagers together came to the service of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them, "Are both of you Muslims?" They replied, "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them, "Have you seen the moon?" They replied, "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then ordered the people to fast or to celebrate Eid.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said regarding the sighting of the crescent moon that if two just men bear witness to seeing the moon, then celebrate Eid.

Hazrat Amr bin Dinar states that Hazrat Usman did not accept the testimony of Hashim bin Utbah regarding the sighting of the crescent moon.

Hasan, regarding the person who has seen the moon alone, says that he should fast with the people and celebrate Eid with the people.

Hasan, regarding the person who saw the moon alone, says that his sighting will not be given consideration.

Hazrat Abu Wa'il says that we were at the place of Khanqin when a letter from Hazrat Umar came to us, in which it was written that some moons are bigger than others. When you see the moon during the day, do not break your fast until two Muslims testify that they saw the moon the previous day.
