ما قالوا في الفجر ما هو
Reality of Fajr
Hadith 9317
٩٣١٧ - حدثنا ملازم بن عمرو عن عبد اللَّه بن النعمان عن قيس بن (طلق) (١) قال: (حدثني) (٢) أبي طلق بن علي أن رسول اللَّه ﷺ قال: "كلوا واشربوا ولا (يَهِيدنّكم) (٣) الساطع المصعد، كلوا واشربوا حتى يعترض لكم الأحمر". ⦗٥١٢⦘ وقال: هكذا بيده (٤).
It is narrated from Hazrat Talq bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Eat and drink until the ascending light does not trouble you; continue eating and drinking until the red light appears horizontally. He indicated this with his blessed hand.
Hadith 9318
٩٣١٨ - حدثنا أبو اسامة عن أبي هلال قال حدثنا سوادة بن حنظلة الهلالي عن سمرة بن جندب قال: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "لا يمنعنكم أذان بلال من السحور ولا الصبح المستطيل ولكن الصبح المستطير في الأفق" (١).
It is narrated from Hazrat Samurah bin Jundub that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Let not Bilal’s call to prayer prevent you from eating the pre-dawn meal (suhoor), nor the vertically spreading whiteness of dawn stop you from suhoor. However, after the dawn that spreads horizontally across the horizon, stop eating suhoor.
Hadith 9319
٩٣١٩ - حدثنا وكيع عن ابن أبي ذئب عن (خاله) (١) عن ثوبان قال: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "الفجر فجران فأما الذي كأنه (ذنب) (٢) السرحان فإنه لا يحل شيئا ولا يحرمه ولكن (المستطير) (٣) " (٤).
It is narrated from Hazrat Thawban that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: There are two types of dawn. The dawn that is like the tail of a wolf does not make anything lawful or unlawful, but the dawn that spreads horizontally makes eating and drinking unlawful.
Hadith 9320
٩٣٢٠ - حدثنا وكيع عن ثابت (بن) (١) عمارة عن غنيم بن قيس عن أبي موسى ⦗٥١٣⦘ قال: ليس الفجر الذي هكذا يعني المستطيل ولكن الفجر الذي هكذا يعني المعترض (٢).
Hazrat Abu Musa says that the light which spreads vertically is not the true dawn, but the light which spreads horizontally is the true dawn.
Hadith 9321
٩٣٢١ - حدثنا عبد الصمد بن عبد الوارث عن حوشب بن عقيل عن جعفر (بن نهار) (١) قال: سألت القاسم أهو الساطع أم المعترض، قال: المعترض والساطع الصبح الكاذب.
Hazrat Ja'far bin Nahar says that I asked Hazrat Qasim whether the dawn (Fajr) appears lengthwise or widthwise? He replied that the dawn appears widthwise; the lengthwise appearance is the false dawn (Subh Kadhib).
Hadith 9322
٩٣٢٢ - حدثنا يزيد بن هارون عن عمران عن أبي مجلز قال: الساطع ذلك الصبح الكاذب ولكن إذا (انفضح) (١) الصبح في الأفق.
Hazrat Abu Majliz says that the long (vertical) light is not (the sign of) morning; rather, the light that rises from the horizon is (the sign of) morning.
Hadith 9323
٩٣٢٣ - حدثنا أبو معاوية عن الأعمش عن مسلم قال: لم يكونوا (يعدون) (١) الفجر فجركم، (إنما كانوا) (٢) يعدون الفجر الذي يملأ البيوت والطرق.
Hazrat Muslim says that the predecessors did not consider your (current) dawn as Fajr; rather, they considered that light as Fajr which would illuminate the paths and houses.
Hadith 9324
٩٣٢٤ - حدثنا يزيد بن هارون عن حجاج عن عدي بن ثابت قال: اختلفنا في الفجر فأتينا إبراهيم فقال: الفجر فجران: فأما أحدهما فالفجر الساطع (فلا يحل) (١) الصلاة ولا يحرم الطعام، وأما الفجر المعترض الأحمر فإنه يحل الصلاة ويحرم الطعام والشراب.
Hazrat Adi bin Thabit narrates that we had a disagreement regarding Fajr. We went to Ibrahim, and he said that there are two types of Fajr. One is the bright Fajr, which spreads vertically; this does not make the Fajr prayer permissible nor does it make eating unlawful. The other is the red Fajr, which spreads horizontally; this makes the prayer permissible and eating and drinking unlawful.
Hadith 9325
٩٣٢٥ - حدثنا وكيع عن إسرائيل عن جابر عن عامر وعطاء قالا: الفجر المعترض الذي إلى جنبه حمرة.
Hazrat Aamir and Hazrat Ata say that the dawn spreads horizontally and there is light with it.
Hadith 9326
٩٣٢٦ - حدثنا كثير بن هشام عن جعفر بن برقان قال: سألت الزهري وميمونا فقلت: أريد الصوم فأرى عمود الصبح الساطع، فقالا جميعا: كل واشرب حتى تراه في أفق السماء معترضا.
Hazrat Ja'far bin Burqan says that I asked Hazrat Zuhri and Hazrat Maymun that I want to fast, and I see the morning light in the form of a pillar? They replied that you may eat and drink until the light appears on the horizon of the sky in a horizontal form.
Hadith 9327
٩٣٢٧ - حدثنا ابن إدريس عن حصين عن الشعبي عن عدي بن حاتم قال: لما نزلت: ﴿حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ﴾ [البقرة: ١٨٧]، قال: (قال) (١) عدي: يا رسول اللَّه إني أجعل تحت (وسادتي) (٢) عقالين: عقالًا أسود وعقالًا أبيض فأعرف الليل من النهار فقال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "إن وسادك لطويل (عريض) (٣) إنما هو سواد الليل وبياض النهار" (٤).
Hazrat Adi bin Hatim narrates that when this verse of the Holy Qur'an was revealed { حَتَّی یَتَبَیَّنَ لَکُمُ الْخَیْطُ الأَبْیَضُ مِنَ الْخَیْطِ الأَسْوَد }, I said, "O Messenger of Allah! I placed two threads under my pillow, one black thread and one white thread. I try to distinguish between night and day." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Your pillow is very wide indeed; in this verse, what is meant is the darkness of the night and the whiteness of the day."
