Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once passed by Hazrat Bilal, who was sometimes reciting from one surah and sometimes from another. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him, "Bilal! I passed by you and you were sometimes reciting from one surah and sometimes from another!" He replied, "O Messenger of Allah! May my father be sacrificed for you, I wished to combine fragrance with fragrance." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Recite one surah completely."

Hazrat Abu Ishaq says that Hazrat Ammar used to recite from different surahs during recitation. When this practice of his was objected to, he said, "Do you think that I would insert words into a surah that are not part of it?"

Ibn Aun reports that Muhammad was asked: If a person recites from different sections during recitation, what is the ruling on this? He replied that he should avoid this, because he might inadvertently commit a major sin!

Hazrat Waleed bin Jamee’ narrates from a reliable narrator that Hazrat Khalid bin Waleed led the people in prayer at Hira. He recited from different Surahs, and after concluding the prayer with Salam, he turned towards us and said: Jihad did not allow me to learn the Qur’an.

Hasan considered it disliked to recite from two surahs and used to say that after completing one surah, the next should be started.
