Explanation of the Verse: {Guard the Prayers, Especially the Middle Prayer}
Hadith 8825
٨٨٢٥ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: ثنا أبو معاوية عن الأعمش عن مسلم عن (شتير) (١) ابن شكل عن علي قال: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "يوم الأحزاب شغلونا عن الصلاة الوسطى: صلاة العصر، ملأ اللَّه بيوتهم وقبورهم نارًا"، ثم صلاها بين العشاءين بين المغرب والعشاء (٢).
Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said on the day of the Battle of Ahzab that they kept us occupied from the middle prayer, that is, the Asr prayer. May Allah fill their houses and graves with fire. Then he offered the Asr prayer between the time of Maghrib and Isha.
Hadith 8826
٨٨٢٦ - حدثنا وكيع عن شعبة عن الحكم عن يحيى بن (الجزار) (١) عن علي أن ⦗٣٨٣⦘ النبي ﷺ كان على (فرضة) (٢) من فرض) (٣) الخندق فقال: "شغلونا عن الصلاة الوسطى صلاة العصر حتى غابت الشمس ملأ اللَّه بيوتهم (و) (٤) قبورهم (و) (٥) بطونهم (و) (٦) أجوافهم نارًا" (٧).
Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that on the day of the Battle of the Trench, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the depth of the trench. On that occasion, he said that these disbelievers kept us away from the middle prayer, that is, the Asr prayer, until the sun had set. May Allah fill their houses, their graves, their bellies, and their chests with fire.
Hadith 8827
٨٨٢٧ - حدثنا هشيم عن يونس عن الحسن أن رسول اللَّه ﷺ قال: " (الصلاة) (١) الوسطى صلاة العصر" (٢).
It is narrated from Hasan that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The middle prayer is the Asr prayer.
Hadith 8828
٨٨٢٨ - حدثنا هشيم قال: أخبرنا أبو بشر قال: (أخبرني) (١) رجل عن سالم بن عبد اللَّه أن حفصة أم المؤمنين قالت: (الصلاة) (٢) الوسطى: صلاة العصر ﴿وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ﴾ [البقرة: ٢٣٨] (٣).
Hazrat Hafsa, Mother of the Believers, says that the middle prayer is the Asr prayer. And stand before Allah with humility and submissiveness.
Hadith 8829
٨٨٢٩ - حدثنا وكيع عن داود بن قيس عن عبد اللَّه بن رافع عن أم سلمة أنها استكتبت مصحفا، فلما بلغت ﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى﴾ [البقرة: ٢٣٨]، قالت: أكتب العصر (١).
Hazrat Abdullah bin Rafi' narrates that Hazrat Umm Salamah was having a Mushaf written, and when she reached this verse { حَافِظُوا عَلَی الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلاَۃ الْوُسْطَی } (Be watchful of the prayers, and especially the middle prayer), she said: Write that by this is meant the Asr prayer.
Hadith 8830
٨٨٣٠ - حدثنا زيد بن (حباب) (١) عن معاوية بن صالح قال: أخبرني موسى بن (يزيد) (٢) قال: سألت أبا أمامة عن الصلاة الوسطى فقال: لا أحسبها إلا الصبح (٣).
Hazrat Musa bin Yazid says that I asked Hazrat Abu Umamah about the middle prayer, so he replied that in my opinion, it is the Fajr prayer.
Hadith 8831
٨٨٣١ - حدثنا أبو داود الطيالسي عن ابن أبي ذئب عن الزبرقان عن زهرة قال: كنا جلوسًا في المسجد مع زيد بن ثابت (فسئل) (١) عن الصلاة الوسطى فقال: هي الظهر، فمر أسامة (فسئل) (٢) فقال: هي الظهر كان رسول اللَّه ﷺ يصليها بالهجير (٣).
Hazrat Zahra narrates that we were sitting in the mosque with Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit when he was asked about the middle prayer. He replied that it refers to the Zuhr (noon) prayer. Hazrat Usama passed by and was asked the same question, and he also replied that it refers to the Zuhr prayer. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer it at midday.
Hadith 8832
٨٨٣٢ - حدثنا هشيم قال: أخبرنا عوف عن أبي رجاء عن ابن عباس قال: هي صلاة الفجر (١).
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that what is meant by this is the Fajr prayer.
Hadith 8833
٨٨٣٣ - حدثنا هشيم قال: أنا (عبد الحميد) (١) بن جعفر عمن حدثه عن (منظور) (٢) بن أبي ثعلبة عن زيد بن ثابت [قال: هي الظهر (٣).
Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit says that by this is meant the Zuhr prayer.
Hadith 8834
٨٨٣٤ - حدثنا هشيم قال: أنا العوام عن الأنصاري عن زيد بن ثابت] (١) أنه كان يقول ذلك (٢).
Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit says that this refers to the Zuhr prayer.
Hadith 8835
٨٨٣٥ - حدثنا وكيع قال: حدثنا (١) محمد بن عمرو عن القاسم عن عائشة قالت: (الصلاة) (٢) الوسطى صلاة العصر (٣).
Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the middle prayer refers to the Asr prayer.
Hadith 8836
٨٨٣٦ - حدثنا أبو داود عن محمد بن طلحة عن (زبيد) (١) عن مرة عن عبد اللَّه قال: هي العصر (٢).
Hazrat Abdullah says that this refers to the Asr prayer.
Hadith 8837
٨٨٣٧ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا سفيان عن عاصم عن ((زر) (١) بن) (٢) حبيش ⦗٣٨٦⦘ أن عبيدة سأل (عليًّا) (٣) عن الصلاة الوسطى فذكر عن النبي ﷺ نحو هذا الحديث (٤).
Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about the middle prayer, so he narrated a hadith similar to this hadith.
Hadith 8838
٨٨٣٨ - حدثنا وكيع قال: ثنا سفيان عن أبي إسحاق عن الحارث عن علي قال: الصلاة الوسطى صلاة العصر (١).
Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the middle prayer refers to the Asr prayer.
Hadith 8839
٨٨٣٩ - حدثنا وكيع قال حدثنا شعبة عن أبي إسحاق عن (عمير) (١) بن (تميم) (٢) قال: سمعت ابن عباس يقول: ﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى﴾ صلاة العصر (٣).
Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding the command of Allah Almighty { حَافِظُوا عَلَی الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلاَۃ الْوُسْطَی } (Be steadfast in prayers and especially the middle prayer) states that by this is meant the Asr prayer.
Hadith 8840
٨٨٤٠ - حدثنا ابن عيينة عن مسعر عن سلمة عن أبي الأحوص عن علي قال: هي التي (فرط) (١) فيها بن داود وهي العصر (٢).
Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that this is the prayer in which Hazrat Ibn Dawood (Sulaiman) showed negligence, and it is the Asr prayer.
Hadith 8841
٨٨٤١ - حدثنا أبو الأحوص عن أبي إسحاق عن الحارث عن علي قال: الصلاة الوسطى التي فرط فيها سليمان صلاة العصر (١).
Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the middle prayer is the one in which Hazrat Sulaiman showed negligence, and that is the Asr prayer.
Hadith 8842
٨٨٤٢ - حدثنا ابن فضيل عن عاصم عن ابن سيرين قال: (سئل) (١) شريح عن الصلاة الوسطى فقال: [حافظوا عليها (تصيبوها) (٢).
Hazrat Shurayh was asked about the middle prayer, so he said: Guard all the prayers, you will find it yourself.
Hadith 8843
٨٨٤٣ - حدثنا جعفر بن عون عن أبي حيان عن أبيه عن ربيع (بن) (١) (خثيم) (٢): سئل عن الصلاة الوسطى؟ فقال) (٣)؛ هي واحدة منهن، فحافظوا عليها.
Hazrat Rabi' bin Khuthaym was asked about the middle prayer, so he said that it is one of the five prayers; be steadfast in all of them.
Hadith 8844
٨٨٤٤ - حدثنا هشيم قال: أخبرنا أبو بشر عن سعيد بن جبير قال: هي العصر.
Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair says that the middle prayer refers to the Asr prayer.
Hadith 8845
٨٨٤٥ - حدثنا يزيد بن هارون عن عبد الملك عن عطاء عن عبيد بن عمير أنه كان يقول: ﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى﴾ (وصلاة) (١) العصر.
Hazrat Ubaid bin Umar, regarding the command of Allah Almighty { حَافِظُوا عَلَی الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلاَۃ الْوُسْطَی } (Be steadfast in prayers and especially the middle prayer), says that it refers to the Asr prayer. According to Hazrat Ata, it is the Fajr prayer.
Hadith 8847
٨٨٤٧ - حدثنا شبابة قال: ثنا شعبة قال: ثنا (حيان) (١) الأزدي (قال ⦗٣٨٨⦘ سمعت) (٢) ابن (عمر وسئل) (٣) عن الصلاة الوسطى وقيل له إن أبا هريرة يقول: هي العصر فقال: إن أبا هريرة يكثر، ابن (عمر) (٤) يقول: هي الصبح (٥).
Hazrat Hayan Azdi reports that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) was asked about the middle prayer, and he was informed that according to Hazrat Abu Hurairah, it refers to the Asr prayer. Upon hearing this, Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said, "Abu Hurairah talks a lot; it refers to the Fajr prayer."
Hadith 8848
٨٨٤٨ - حدثنا وكيع عن شعبة عن سعد بن إبراهيم عن حفص (بن) (١) عاصم عن زيد بن ثابت (٢).
Hazrat Zaid bin Thabit says that the middle prayer refers to the Zuhr prayer.
Hadith 8850
٨٨٥٠ - حدثنا أبو داود عن عبد الرحمن الخياط قال: سمعت عكرمة يقول: هي الظهر قبلها (صلاتان) (١) وبعدها (صلاتان) (٢).
Hazrat Ikrimah says that this refers to the Zuhr prayer; there are two prayers before it and two after it.
Hadith 8851
٨٨٥١ - حدثنا أبو داود عن حبيب (عن) (١) عمرو بن هرم عن جابر بن زيد قال: هي الصبح.
Hazrat Jabir bin Zaid says that by this is meant the Fajr prayer.
Hadith 8852
٨٨٥٢ - حدثنا يعلى بن عبيد عن جويبر عن الضحاك قال: الصلاة الوسطى صلاة العصر.
Hazrat Dhahhak says that the middle prayer is the Asr prayer.
Hadith 8853
٨٨٥٣ - حدثنا شبابة عن ورقاء عن بن أبي نجيح عن مجاهد ﴿حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى﴾ الصبح.
Hazrat Mujahid, regarding the Divine Command { حَافِظُوا عَلَی الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلاَۃ الْوُسْطَی } (Be steadfast in prayers and especially the middle prayer), says that by this is meant the Fajr (morning) prayer.
Hadith 8854
٨٨٥٤ - [حدثنا عفان قال: ثنا همام قال: ثنا قتادة عن الحسن عن سمرة (بن جندب) (١) عن النبي ﷺ قال: " (صلاة) (٢) الوسطى صلاة العصر] (٣) " (٤).
It is narrated from Hazrat Samurah that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The middle prayer is the morning prayer.
Hadith 8855
٨٨٥٥ - [حدثنا عفان قال: ثنا (وهيب) (١) قال: ثنا خالد عن أبي قلابة عن أبي المهلب عن أبي بن كعب قال: الصلاة الوسطى صلاة العصر] (٢) (٣).
Hazrat Ubayy bin Ka'b says that the middle prayer is the Fajr prayer.
Hadith 8856
٨٨٥٦ - [حدثنا سهل بن يوسف عن التيمي عن أبي صالح عن أبي هريرة قال: (الصلاة) (١) الوسطى صلاة العصر] (٢) (٣).
Hazrat Abu Huraira says that the middle prayer is the Asr prayer.
Hadith 8857
٨٨٥٧ - حدثنا سهل بن يوسف عن التيمي عن قتادة عن أبي أيوب عن عائشة قالت: (صلاة) (١) الوسطى صلاة العصر (٢).
Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the middle prayer is the Asr prayer.
Hadith 8858
٨٨٥٨ - حدثنا الفضل بن دكين عن محمد بن طلحة عن زبيد عن مرة عن عبد اللَّه عن النبي ﷺ قال: "هي العصر" (١).
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said that by this is meant the Asr prayer.
Hadith 8859
٨٨٥٩ - حدثنا وكيع عن (قرة) (١) قال: ثنا أبو رجاء قال: صليت مع ابن عباس الصبح في مسجد البصرة فقال: هذه الصلاة الوسطى (٢).
Hazrat Abu Raja says that I offered the Fajr prayer with Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) in the mosque of Basra. He said that this is the middle prayer.
Hadith 8860
٨٨٦٠ - حدثنا عبد العزيز بن محمد الدراوردي عن زيد بن أسلم قال: (سمعت) (١) ابن عمر يقول: الوسطى صلاة الصبح (٢).
Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the middle prayer is the Fajr (morning) prayer.
