Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Imran bin Husain narrates that I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the conquest of Makkah. He stayed in Makkah for eighteen days and used to perform two rak'ahs (for each prayer), and after completing the prayer, he would tell the people, "We are travelers, so you should complete your prayer."

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed for fifteen days after the conquest of Makkah; he used to shorten the prayers during this period, then he proceeded towards Hunain.

Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we set out on a journey with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he shortened the prayers until he reached Makkah. Then he stayed there for ten days and continued to shorten the prayers, until he returned to Madinah and then discontinued shortening the prayers.

Hazrat Ikrimah narrates that the Pure Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed in Makkah for seventeen days and used to shorten the prayers during this period.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) says that if you have to stay in a city for fifteen days, then you should perform Qasr prayer.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Maswar narrates that we stayed with Hazrat Saad bin Malik in Oman for two months. He used to shorten the prayers (qasr), while we used to offer the full prayers. We asked him about this, and he replied, "We know better."

Hazrat Abu Al-Minhāl says that I asked Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that I stay in Madinah for a year and do not pack luggage for travel, so what should I do? He replied: Shorten the prayer (Qasr).

Hazrat Abu Jamrah Nasr bin Imran says that I asked Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that we have to spend a long time in Khurasan for jihad, how should we perform the prayer? He replied: Pray two rak'ahs even if you have to stay for twenty years.

Hasan narrates that Abdur Rahman bin Samurah stayed in Kabul for one or two summers; there he did not offer the Friday prayer, rather he used to perform two rak'ahs of prayer.

Hasan narrates that Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) stayed in Nishapur for one or two years. He used to perform two rak'ahs, then would say salam, and then would perform another two rak'ahs.

Hazrat Malik says that I asked Hazrat Jabir bin Zaid: I stay in Kaskar for one or two years and become like the residents there, so how many rak'ahs should I pray? He replied: Pray two rak'ahs.

Hazrat Abu Wa'il says that I performed two rak'ahs with Hazrat Masruq in succession for two years, then I asked him, "O Abu Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her)! What motivated you to do this?" He replied, "The desire to act upon the Sunnah."

It is narrated similarly through another chain of transmission.

Ibrahim says that I stayed with Hazrat Alqamah in Khwarazm for two years; he used to offer two rak'ahs.

Hazrat Muhammad bin Abdur Rahman bin Thawban narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed in Tabuk for twenty nights, and he used to offer two rak'ahs of the traveler's prayer.

Hazrat Aamir narrates that Hazrat Alqamah stayed in Marw for two years for jihad and used to shorten the prayers there.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed and prayed for seventeen days and he used to shorten the prayer. Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that whoever stays and prays for seventeen days should shorten the prayer, and whoever intends to stays longer and prays than that should offer the full prayer.
