Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said regarding the statement of Allah Almighty { وَلاَ تَجْہَرْ بِصَلاَتِکَ وَلاَ تُخَافِتْ بِہَا } that what is meant by it is supplication (dua).

Ibrahim and Hazrat Ata say regarding the command of Allah Almighty { وَلاَ تَجْہَرْ بِصَلاَتِکَ وَلاَ تُخَافِتْ بِہَا } that what is meant by it is supplication (dua).

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair says that this refers to the recitation of the Qur'an.

Hazrat Abu Ayyaz, regarding the command of Allah Almighty { وَلاَ تَجْہَرْ بِصَلاَتِکَ وَلاَ تُخَافِتْ بِہَا }, says that it refers to supplication (dua).

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair narrates that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited (the Qur'an), he would raise his voice; this pleased the Muslims and displeased the disbelievers. Upon this, the following verse was revealed: { وَلاَ تَجْہَرْ بِصَلاَتِکَ وَلاَ تُخَافِتْ بِہَا }

Hazrat Abdullah says that nothing is hidden from the one to whom he is making others listen.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin narrates that I asked Hazrat Abu Ubaidah about recitation, so he said: "Let your heart listen."

Hasan, regarding the recitation in the daytime prayers, says: "Let your heart hear it."

Hazrat Abu Ayyaz narrates that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray near the Ka'bah, he would raise his voice, upon which the polytheists would trouble him. Then this verse was revealed { وَلاَ تَجْہَرْ بِصَلاَتِکَ وَلاَ تُخَافِتْ بِہَا }

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding the statement of Allah Almighty { وَلاَ تَجْہَرْ بِصَلاَتِکَ وَلاَ تُخَافِتْ بِہَا } says that what is meant by this is supplication (dua).

Hazrat Mujahid, regarding the command of Allah Almighty { وَلاَ تَجْہَرْ بِصَلاَتِکَ وَلاَ تُخَافِتْ بِہَا }, says that what is meant by this is supplication (dua).

Hazrat Abdullah bin Shaddad narrates that it was the custom of the Bedouins of Banu Tamim that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) concluded the prayer with salam, they used to say: "O Allah! Grant us wealth and children." Upon this, the following verse was revealed { وَلاَ تَجْہَرْ بِصَلاَتِکَ وَلاَ تُخَافِتْ بِہَا }

It is narrated similarly through another chain.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin, regarding the command of Allah Almighty { وَلاَ تَجْہَرْ بِصَلاَتِکَ وَلاَ تُخَافِتْ بِہَا }, says that it should be beautiful openly and excellent secretly. And regarding the command of Allah Almighty { وَابْتَغِ بَیْنَ ذَلِکَ سَبِیلاً }, he says that its meaning is that you should keep it equal outwardly and inwardly.

Hazrat Saeed narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite "Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem" aloud. And Musaylimah used to call himself "Rahman." When the polytheists heard the word "Rahman" in "Bismillah" from you, they said that he has mentioned the deity of Yamamah, Musaylimah. Then the matter reached the stage of debate, challenge, and uproar. Upon this, this verse was revealed { وَلاَ تَجْہَرْ بِصَلاَتِکَ وَلاَ تُخَافِتْ بِہَا }
