Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Zaid bin Wahb narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) used to lead us in Taraweeh prayers.

Hazrat Abu Bakr bin Ayyash says that I asked Hazrat Ata whether Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to lead them in Tarawih prayers. He replied that among the distinguished students of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), Hazrat Zadhan, Hazrat Abu Al-Bakhtari, and other individuals used to gather their respective people in the mosque during Ramadan and lead them in prayer.

Hazrat Abu Dharr narrates that during Ramadan, we fasted with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He did not lead us in the Tarawih prayer until the twenty-third of Ramadan. Then, when seven days of Ramadan remained, he led us in prayer for one third of the night. The next night, he did not lead the Tarawih prayer. Then, on the following night, he led us in prayer until half the night had passed. We then said, "O Messenger of Allah! If only you would lead us in prayer for the rest of the nights as well." He replied, "Whoever stands with the Imam in prayer until he finishes, it is written for him as if he prayed the whole night." Then he led us in prayer again, and when three nights of the month remained, he led us in the Tarawih prayer and gathered his family and womenfolk. He led us in prayer for such a long time that we feared we might miss 'Falah.' The narrator says, "I asked, 'What is Falah?' He replied, 'Suhur (pre-dawn meal).'"

Hazrat Naeem bin Ziyad Abu Talha Anmari says that I heard Hazrat Nu’man bin Bashir saying from the pulpit of Homs that we used to pray with the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) on the twenty-third night of Ramadan until the first third of the night, then on the twenty-fifth night we prayed with him until half the night, and on the twenty-seventh night we prayed for so long that we feared that we might miss Falah. We used to call Suhoor "Falah."

Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in prayer on one of the nights of Ramadan in a room made of palm leaves. Then he poured out a bucket of water and said: Allah is the Greatest, He is the Owner of Sovereignty, Power, Majesty, and Greatness.

Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to encourage the offering of Tarawih in Ramadan, but did not make it obligatory.

Hazrat Ikrimah narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was performing prayer in one of his chambers during a night of Ramadan. When people heard his voice, they began to follow him in prayer. When he became aware that people were following him, he lowered his voice.

Hazrat Zaid bin Wahb narrates that Hazrat Abdullah used to lead us in Tarawih prayers, and he would return during the night.

Hazrat Abu Abdur Rahman narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) led the Tarawih prayer in Ramadan.

Hazrat Waleed bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) reports from his father that Hazrat Suwaid bin Ghaflah used to lead us in prayer, and during Ramadan, at the age of one hundred and twenty years, he would lead us in Tarawih prayers.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abdul Qari narrates that Hazrat Umar bin Khattab saw people praying separately during Ramadan, so he said that if they prayed behind one reciter, it would be better. Then he gathered them behind Hazrat Ubayy bin Ka'b.

Hazrat Abu Salamah narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to encourage the offering of Tarawih in Ramadan, but he did not make it obligatory.

Hazrat Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Allah Almighty has made fasting in Ramadan obligatory upon you and has declared standing (in prayer) during it as Sunnah. Whoever fasts in Ramadan with faith and hoping for reward from Allah, all his previous sins are forgiven.

Hazrat Urwah narrates that Hazrat Umar ordered Hazrat Ubayy to lead the people in Tarawih prayers during Ramadan.
