Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), son of Hussain, saw a man who would enter the blessed chamber of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and make supplication. He called him and said, "Shall I not narrate to you a hadith which my father transmitted from my grandfather, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Do not make my grave a place of gathering for happiness, and do not make your homes into graveyards. Send blessings upon me, for wherever you are, your blessings and peace reach me.'"

It is narrated from Hazrat Hasan bin Hasan that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do not make my grave a place of gathering for celebration, and do not make your homes like graveyards. Send blessings upon me, for wherever you send blessings upon me, they reach me.

It is narrated from Hazrat Zaid bin Aslam that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: O Allah! Do not make my grave an idol that is worshipped. The wrath of Allah became very severe upon those people who made the graves of their prophets places of prostration.

Hazrat Nafi' narrates that Hazrat Umar came to know that people were coming to the tree under which the Prophet had taken the pledge from his companions, so he ordered that the tree be cut down.

Hazrat Jundub narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said five days before his passing: "Those before you made the graves of their prophets and righteous people places of prostration. Do not make graves places of prostration; I forbid you from this."

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said during his final illness that Allah Almighty cursed the Jews and Christians because they made the graves of their prophets places of prostration. Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says that if there had not been a fear of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) grave being made a place of prostration, his blessed grave would have been made prominent and clearly visible.

Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that during the illness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in which he passed away, people were talking. Among them, Hazrat Umm Salamah or Umm Habibah said that they had seen a church in Abyssinia in which there were pictures. Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that it was their custom that when a righteous man among them passed away, they would make his grave a place of prostration and would make pictures of him. These people are the worst of all creatures.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed women who visit graves, those who place lamps upon them, and those who make them places of prostration.

Hazrat Suwaid narrates that we went for Hajj with Hazrat Umar. During the Fajr prayer, he recited Surah Al-Fil and Surah Quraysh. When he completed the Hajj and was returning, people started running quickly at a certain place. Hazrat Umar asked, "What is here?" He was told that this is the place where the Prophet (peace be upon him) had prayed. He said, "The People of the Book were destroyed for this very reason; they turned the relics of their prophets into places of worship. What should be done is that if the time for prayer comes while you are here, then pray; and if it is not the time for prayer, then do not pray."

The Prophet Muhammad says that the predecessors disliked any alteration in the relics of the Prophets.

It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed those nations who made the graves of their prophets places of prostration.

Ibrahim considered it disliked that a mosque be built over a grave.
