Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Humaid narrates that Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about performing prayer on a boat. The freed slave of Hazrat Anas, Abdullah bin Abi Utbah, who was sitting with us, said that he had traveled with Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri, Hazrat Abu Darda, and Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them) (Humaid says that he also mentioned some other people). Our imam would lead us in prayer standing on the boat, and we would pray standing behind him. Sometimes, if the boat was near the shore, we would disembark and perform the prayer on the shore.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Muslim bin Yasar narrates that his father used to place a flag in the boat and would stand and perform prayer, while the boat continued to move with its sail.

Hazrat Sha'bi, Hazrat Ibn Sirin, and Hasan say that perform the prayer standing in the boat. Hasan says do not cause hardship for your companions.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin says that on a boat, if you wish, you may perform the prayer standing, and if you wish, sitting; however, performing it standing is superior.

Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib says that offer prayer standing in the boat; if you do not have the strength for it, then offer prayer sitting, and perform prostration on the plank of the boat.

Hazrat Sha'bi says: "Offer prayer standing in the boat."

Ibrahim says: "Pray while standing in the boat."

Hazrat Mughira says that I asked Ibrahim about praying in a boat, so he said that if one has the ability to pray outside the boat, then he should pray outside; otherwise, he should pray standing in the boat. If he cannot pray standing, then he should pray sitting. However, whenever the direction of the boat changes from the Qibla, he should also turn his own direction.

Hazrat Hakam says that one should perform prayer standing in a boat; if unable to pray standing, then pray sitting. If one has the ability to go to the shore to perform the prayer, then one should go outside and pray.

Hazrat Aamir says that he would set up a flag in the boat and pray facing towards it.

Hazrat Qais Kahili narrates that I asked Hazrat Ata about performing prayer on a boat, so he replied that as long as you do not find the shore, do not perform the prayer.
